Noticed this updated 2013 Subway bike deal today which looks pretty good for the price. Noted as an 'Easter Special' so might only be available for a week or so? Looks to be £199.99 online or £249.99 instore. Sizes 18" and 20" frames. Dont forget there may be other ways to get more discount i.e Quidco/TCB (c. 4 or 5% ) and as with previous deals potentially the 10% off Halfords voucher from the British Cycling Bronze membership (also quidco) and possibly work discount schemes could make this a very attractive price.

The size that fits you.

Do you have a long torso and short legs or long legs and short torso?

It's always best to go in for a fitting of the bike you are considering.

Took a look at this bike yesterday. Seems not as well finished as the usual subway and missing the disc brakes too. I guess it's a nice fuss free solution for some commuters. For reference the bike colour is a lightly darker shade of red in the flesh (which looks better in my opinion)

20" . I am 5.10 & an all important 1/2 & have a 20" but the seat post is at its most lowest position & my feet are just at the right position, its probably slightly too big for me really so for 6ft, it would be ideal size.I do also have short legs 30" & long Torso

Steel fork, basic components, although alloy frame (doesn't look it form the pics though) don't make this an Easter special for me.
The price seems to be the going rate for this spec and not a 'Hot deal' sorry.

Been down to the Newhaven store to inspect the demonstration model. Seems very light and was able to make it £179.99 using promotion code A13AB03. It meets all my needs.

Nice find, be surprised if there's a better option out there for £200.

would never buy a bike from halfords , rubbish

^ So the higher end stuff for £2k+ that some stores sell are rubbish eh?

Steel fork's normal, though better ones are chromoly; this is hi-tensile steel, which is OK but heavier for the same strength.
Agree with your comments though - it's a sound bike, but as is almost always the case with Halfords the 'original' price is ridiculous. This bike was NEVER worth £400.

I have a Subway 8 from 2011 which has the same frame (apart from the bottom bracket shell) and it's a brilliant bike - but much better specced, and I got it for £320 which really WAS a bargain for an Alfine hub and hydraulic disc brakes. I'm 5ft 11 with 32" inside leg and the 20" frame is perfect.

Yeah, Carreras suck right & you can't get a decent bike for less than £1000?

Titan full sus, cost me £300, a few changes because it's how it's done but very capable & my only complaint is it's weight.

I have one. Don't be fooled by the picture, this might technically be a hybrid bike but it feels more like a light mountain bike.
There are no shocks on the front which is a revelation after years of riding bikes with shock absorbers as all of my forward energy takes me up the side of locks when I'm cycling along the canal instead of being lost as the shocks plunge when you hit the slope.
Breaks are basic. Tyres are semi slick which gives nice low rolling resistance but can get a bit interesting on ice or mud.
I've no complaints for the money - a couple of quid less than this from the last time they had them on offer.

Specialized and trek come with lifetime warranty on frames. Boardman only sold by Halford because it's like buying tesco own brand baked beans.

Never seen a hybrid with front or rear suspension.

Then you've not been looking very hard. Try the CANNONDALE Quick CX3 Hybrid Bike.

Go on then. Need to shift this pot belly and i've got a lovely coastline to explore. 179.99 and 4.5% quidco.

Hot added, cheers OP. Cheers Snuffpig for the A13AB03 code.

HELLO DAVE

Personally think this is a better option for the money.....much better bike if you are tall as Xl frame

Beware of Carrera frame sizes. I found the 18" frame to be smaller than all other 18" framed bikes I'd ridden before, yet the 20" frame was too big. I know it's about inside leg measurement but there's I think something odd going on with carrera bikes.

And lastly, incase anyone is confused, this is not a hybrid bike, it's a mountain bike with a rigid front fork. It's playing with semantics to call it a hybrid when pretty much every other hybrid bike out there has 700c wheels.

Wtf!!! I posted this exact deal yesterday and it got pulled down saying it was SPAM!!! Another reason to not bother posting deals again

I have the 2011 version limited edition and its a great bike for the money. I have to agree that it's more of a mountain bike than a racer but comes with smooth road tyres. I have the 20" version and I'm 5'11 and its a good fit.

anthonycox

Never seen a hybrid with front or rear suspension.

It depends on your definition of hybrid. Some 'hybrids' are basically flat-barred road bikes, others are almost-but-not-quite mountain bikes, and all sorts in between. Was tempted at one point by the Carrera Crossfire, a more typical hybrid, but put off by the front suspension, which a lot of hybrids do seem to have; maybe to tempt people away from mountain bikes if they only ride on the road but think they 'need' the suspension? Adds a lot of weight to the front, from what I've seen.

Not seen one with rear suspension, but a fair few have suspension seatposts to make the ride more comfortable.

Although the tyres have less tread than mountain bike tyres, I would not call these road tyres. They're far too wide in my opinion.

I was not impressed with quality of my son's Carrera. A seized bottom bracket. All rusted up and dry after less than 2 years.

Yes they are wide but smoother tread making them more suitable for road use

Fairly negligible though. You'll get better results by just making sure your tyres are at the right pressure imo, lighter tread or not.

Owner reviews are a bit mixed (from the Halfords site). I'd say this is a decent price for the spec but hardly a hot deal.

I am using it for daily commute to work and done over 2000 miles in past 8 months and going stong only tightened the brake cables.

I love the look of this bike and for less than £200 (plus some Quidco) it's a bargain in my opinion. I think with Halfords it depends on where you go but the lad who puts the bikes together at Blackpool (and does the servicing) is a quality bicycle mechanic, very friendly and helpful. I rate them and even though I do my own maintenance, I have the service contract with them. Carrera frames are pretty decent. I did see a Claud Butler Nevada on Amazon for £165.00 delivered but that's a mountain bike rather than a hybrid.

I'm tempted by last year's version but it will cost an extra £72, using the voucher code. I had a look and saw it was £199 last year so I'm probably being daft but I prefer e look of it. Any opinions?

Go for the Claud Butler, don't be fooled by the semantics, there's very little difference between this Halfords bike and a mountain bike.
