I would NEVER take my car to these rip off merchants! You will end up paying for repairs that are not needed!
Actually the law has changed. If you fail a mot on major repairs your car will not be able to be on the road even if your old mot is still in date.

Hi there @tintowellfan.

No issue with the point you're trying to make (ie that the MOT tests are not changing).
However your first post was offensive and abusive towards other members. We won't be having that.

Your second post accused HUKD of having some illegal affiliation with Halfords. Which we clearly don't.

Even this post which we've allowed, you're still referring to other users as 'eejits'.

Just play nicely and your posts won't keep getting moderated.

Thanks,

If it fails look at what they fail it on, do any work actually needed, then go somewhere else. You can get a 13 month mot, if you test early, so it gives you a month to do any work.

Sounds good except now you can't just drive away. If they fail you your car is no longer road legal, your fail supersedes your previous MOT, and by right your fail gets uploaded immediately and you are driving without a passing MOT and invalid insurance back home/ to another garage.

You will have to get towed elsewhere.

edit: see jimbob5 post below

I am wrong IF you get a major fault you can still use your car until previous MOT expires, even though its a fail as long as your previous MOT is valid. Its only dangerous faults that will invalidate the previous MOT immediately.

I agree they pick up on anything but saying that, I have an old car that not been MOT’d in a while, and whilst I think I have prepared it to sail the MOT you never know. Quite happily let them tell me if there are some other bits that need doing after all it’s FREE as I had to make a Halfords purchase anyway.

Just booked my mot yesterday for end of month with Halfords. Am gutted as I had to pre-pay.😔

New roles now if you Fail MOT it's illegal to drive you car without the repairs!!
Do not do this. They charge very extortionate prices. Also if you don't decide to do the work from them, they'll .was something else up.

No the posters clearly said “any purchase” the one Halfords lad said to the other how can they afford to do that his reply was he dreaded to think! Let’s be honest they will be picky, but if you car is regularly maintained then you should have no major defects to where they can hold your car at ransom
I had mine done with Halfords just after they changed the testing on Diesel cars so I was a bit apprehensive, it was a good experience, they didn’t charge me for anything, they were nice people, my car passed it’s MOT and the process of booking it in was easy. I would def use them again, voted hot.
If you go for this scam you’re asking for it

I've got a 30 year old VW campervan and I always take it to Halfords. Normally it passes straight away, the couple of times it has failed they've allowed me to take it away and fix it myself. Once they called me to say it had failed because of the headlight alignement (it's a left-hand drive), but when I went o pick it up they had fitted their own beam-adjusters and passed it (and didn't charge me).
Fantastic service from South Shields Halfords.

I agree. I always take my car to the local Halfords Autocentre and I've never had a problem. My car has always passed and the service from them was excellent!
HI moderator. What is the problem with my very factually correct posts? The MOT test is not changing like some of the eejits are trying to say on this post.
I've used 2 different Halfords Autocentres in the last 8 or so years, booked online for cheap MOTs and the service has always been excellent, only once had a failure and it was only £80 or so to remedy it so thumbs up

Just a few points then lol.
Maybe a little childish, but reading 'eejits' does make me chuckle.
My Tesla turns 3 soon this is great news! Free MOT as there is not much they could fail it on and couldn’t do the repairs anyway

This was my 1st thought, but if it fails on something that determines you can't drive it away your stuck with their (probobly higher) price or having to organise/pay for removal of your car.
These guys will find literally anything they can wrong with your car, that’s the reason they’re doing it free. I used them once and I have never used them again!

Not sure I can cancel will call tomorrow and ask. There is no option on email either.
Shame no info up yet. Would be worth it for me as had a service last week and no faults found. So buy an air freshener from across the road and get another years mot, not to be sniffed at

Enlighten me, please.
It's not technically free when they discover loads of things wrong with your pristine car, and offer to fix them at extortionate prices.

Kindest regards

So who enforces that?
Great deal for me, my car is MOT exempt so if it fails it fails and at least I will know what I need to get sorted on the car, it failed in may for:
  • Nearside Front Suspension arm ball joint dust cover excessively deteriorated so that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt (2.4.G.2)
  • Nearside Front wheel bearing has excessive play (2.5.A.3c)
  • Offside rear parking brake recording little or no effort (3.7.B.6a)

Cost under £15 in parts and by the time I could get it in for retest MOT wasnt required.

This was with halfords and the guy testing it was very fair, mind you he missed that the exhaust was blowing quite badly, he even commented on the fact that I could be sure they wouldn't fail it on anything just to get the work as it didn't show up on their parts system when I asked them how much for them to supply and fit the parts, he also said he want going to do the shaker plates for fear of damaging something. If anything he was too lenient. Never batted an eyelid at no rear number plate light or reversing light as he had never tested a car that old and assumed that they wasn't fitted as standard.
don't bother - they are like kwick fit - they will find something and if not fail you for headlight alignment, windscreen washers or some trivial thing

What is it? A Ford model T?!
Nobody including a garage can stop you from taking your car after an mot fail. I've driven cars to an mot and back without an mot and it is not illegal or will be aslong as you have insurance and are going too and returning straight from the test being carried out

^This isn't accurate. According to the government website (see below), only problems categorised as "dangerous" mean you can't drive your vehicle away. Which I think is fair enough.

"Defects found during the MOT are categorised as either:

  • dangerous
  • major
  • minor"

"Driving a vehicle that’s failed
You can take your vehicle away if:

  • your current MOT certificate is still valid
  • no ‘dangerous’ problems were listed in the MOT
Otherwise, you’ll need to get it repaired before you can drive."
