Drive to any Halfords* store or Halfords Autocentre (find your nearest*), and you can ask for a free winter car check.
The offer's available at 700+ locations nationwide and Halfords says it's worth £15 - though in reality, it's a year-round freebie, branded winter or summer depending on the time.

What's covered by the Halfords free car check?

Battery

Light bulbs

Windscreen wipers & chip check

Oil levels

Screenwash levels (topped up for free)

Halfords says it'll take 15 minutes and you don't need to book in advance – just turn up and speak to a member of staff. Be warned... they may try to sell to you, but there's no obligation to buy anything or act on any advice you're given. These checks are completely free.

Do you need somebody to check these things. if you cannot check these yourself you should not be driving.
Bet that they find loads of stuff wrong and will be happy to fix it for you
in all fairness if you are disabled or old it would help you out alot. not everyone can do these checks.

apart from the battery, all drivers should be able to check the other …apart from the battery, all drivers should be able to check the other stuff themselves

Shouldn’t own a car if you can’t check them basic things

What if ive got a summer car
Apparently it's a year round freebie, just branded winter or summer depending on the time.
Think they would do an antifreeze check as well but price is reasonable

most drivers do not know anything about how to check things in their car. they rely on the annual service to do that. i can check the anti freeze, washer liquid and oil level, but I never do and just rely on the annual service. hubby has never ever checked anything under the car's bonnet and wouldn't even know where to look! i doubt he is the only one.

Had 2 done so far, nothing was forced on me, was told the battery could be an issue, the second one I had was fine.

I check the levels fine apart from the battery so if they check it for free and top up the screen wash then it's good as far as I'm concerned.

New drivers do ! It’s now part of the test and you can fail for poor knowledge
All good I gotta take grandsons bike to get re-sorted will get this done while I there
I wouldn't let these incompetent clowns anywhere near my car after damaging my Audi by nothing more complicated than fitting a headlight. In addition trying to sell me this and that I didn't want.
I think they prey on people not knowing anything about vehicle mechanics and try and milk them dry.
Avoid at all costs.

Why just cars, how about inability to check for these, loo paper in toilet, tea/coffee in the tins, milk in the fridge, water in the kettle...etc.

These people account for a large slice of the GDP in this country, their service, if improved dramatically could cause a recesssion.

Battery ?
Flipping heck, some of you are just too cynical, at the end of the day this is a FREE deal, nothing to pay, and if this helps just one person then this deal is worth it.
Sorry but I wouldn't trust the trained monkeys at Halfords to open the bonnet of my car let alone touch anything under it.......absolute cowboys
Its basically a free trap to take your car there so they can tell u how u need £000 of repairs. Only took my car once for mot they told me £1350 repairs needed n car can not drive out if their workshop, i said alright drove it away anyway, passed with couple of bulbs etc spend under 50 n council mot station passed it.
They are pure evil trying to prey on clueless public
Just to clarify it was Halfords auto center
They'd check your screenwash levels and say you need a new gearbox...
Like with alot of things in life the quality of the staff employed by a firm will vary, you will get some right idiots and some decent staff, as I say I've not had anything forced on me nor has anything been broken.
DingIs05/11/2019 09:39

Executive training, if people needed a new phone annually, why not with a gearbox every other year as it is far more important, imagine risk of car breaking down on way to an urgent meeting....
Is that the chick from mythbusters
Good to know...

takes 5-10min of reserach on youtube/google to find where everything is located in your bonnet.

Terrifying if you don't have low oil and brake fluid warning lights in your car and carry on like that, a very scary admission indeed
johnszi2304/11/2019 17:25

If you're not physically able to open your bonnet you shouldn't drive? If you need hand controls to drive you may not be able to lift your bonnet let alone check your fluids

I'd let Hellfrauds monkeys fit a bulb but maybe not a headlight on a modern Audi

Most drivers will be aware of warning lights. I am not saying that. What I am saying is, when they see these, they take them to a garage! Or they then look into what they needs to be checked, but not until they see these warnings lights.
Screenwash level if low they will top up for free, surely that's something no?

Yes, but if your car doesn't alert you to low fluid levels and you're too lazy to to check it could be very dangerous.

i doubt we are the only one who doesn't do regular checks though, which is why this deal is even in existence as it is well known that people do not check their car regularly or even know how to do so.

That's precisely what worries me greatly, that people can't even check their brake and clutch fluids and transmission and engine oil levels or be bothered to look at the manual that came with their car to learn how to do so in a few seconds of reading

when i had my own car, i never got it serviced. i checked the oil level, the brake fluid level, the anti-freeze level and the washer fluid level myself and topped them up when needed. then when i moved in with hubby, i sold my car as there was no need to have 2 cars as hubby had a car as well. he never checked anything on his car and always had an annual service done. he has been driving for many years and has never had a problem with the fluid levels becoming too low before the next annual service. he always had a full service done. as it was his car, i never got involved and left it up to him to deal with it.

we now own a car together and as he never had a problem with the fluid level being low between annual service, i am just going to rely on the annual service to deal with the car.
