Now the weather's getting colder, it's a good time to ensure your car is all geared up for winter. You can drive to any Halfords* store or a Halfords Autocentre* and get a free five-point winter check (usually £15) until 31 Jan 2015. There are more than 700 locations available.

The check covers your car's battery, wiper blades, oil levels, screenwash levels, and head/tail lights. Halfords says it takes about 15 minutes, and you don't need to book in advance. It'll also top up your screenwash (up to 1 litre, norm £2ish). Halfords says there is no obligation to buy anything or act on any advice but be prepared - it might try and upsell you.

How do you check the battery manicmidlander ? I use a voltmeter even though my car also measures it its diagnostic menu. Everything else is by sight.

You have nothing better to do than troll - idiot

I wanted a free check of my car when I first got it and I took it to halfords in the morning left it there expecting them to do a check over but when I went back they had a excuse they could not do it due to machine not working. I went again and left the car whole day and went to collect still they had not even check it given me another rubbish excuse. They did say come back but I never bothered waste of time. Go to independent garage now much better!

That was at a halford autocentre btw

I would avoid halfords autocentres at all costs if you have any sense. Speaking from experience from when I took my car in to them for an MOT Any local garage is better than them trust me and they check these things for a small cost without messing your car up and making more work and cost for you. Voted Cold.

I used to work in these fast-fit garages and honestly, it's anything to get you in there to sell you stuff you don't need. These places have sales targets to meet, so it's a tactic to get your car in so they can try and flog you tyres, brake pads, shock absorbers, wheel alignment etc.. I ended up quitting because of that! You'd be a lot better off getting a friend / family member.

15 minutes to check battery, wipers, oil, screenwash and lights? lol thats about 2 minutes work tops

I wouldnt call them trained by any means

Correct link
Halfords are a waste of time
But
For people unable to check simple things then this is a nice touch
Nobody does anything for free nowadays
And they will no doubt have a quick look over your car
Obviously they will try to pump something
This is a 5 point check which really anyone could do
Shame they dont check you have enough antifreeze
Heat added

I would not go anywhere near Halfords again after they broke my car, then they gave me back the car after warranty work was carried out without it been reassembled properly!

Nothing is free so don't even bother.

I personally don't trust Halfords but heat added. Good find.

Staff at my local Halfords Autocentre were very knowledgeable, in my case (even if they did entice me in by offering a "free aircon check" back in the summer... the free check consisted of asking me if was working, lol!).

I guess this offer is perfect for those who don't want to get their hands dirty... just remember why they are offering it for free.

This lot would find a fault on a brand new car. Nothing is free in this world.

Sorry OP but voting cold. Nothing to add beyond previous comments

I wouldn't trust Halfords to check anything. After my wife's Kia went to them for it's service (lease car) it was discovered they had missed/failed to check a whole host of stuff which Kia discovered whilst replacing it's wing mirrors.

Brake pads binding and an oil leak from a seal on the engine for example. Stuff that should easily be noticed during a proper service.

Good feedback and shows just because it maybe free it's not always hot

This is a good post. It is unlikley the staff at Halfords will get such simple checks wrong or cause damage. Great if u caln't or don't want to do these checks yourself. Why so negatve, it is free and it will be of much use to some. Thank you for posting.

I work in a garage and Halfrauds are always on asking us how to fix their cock ups

Troll? Idiot? The contributor makes a valid comment. Your reaction seems OTT. He only expressed his opinion.

Oh you might be surprised at the level of incompetence some [but not all] Halfords staff can excel !! You have been warned.

Simple. Turn the ignition on and if the car starts then the battery is working
For fear of being called an idiotic troll.... The battery check is probably the only thing that most people couldn't do themselves, the rest of the checks are in the car's manual. I never get my battery checked though. Come the day the battery fails, I buy a new one. My experiences over the years with Halford's has been varied. I've found one good and honest Halfords, the rest of them... well I may as well have taken my car to Monkey World in Dorset. If you use a local garage (for local people) regularly then you're better off taking your car to them as most decent local garages would gladly do these checks for you for free.

wouldnt let 'em near my motor 'cos its free.

This is £39 at BMW!

How long would they keep you waiting for this "free check" I wonder. Would rather do this check myself.

Thanks, I thought being called a "troll - idiot" was rather harsh. I was just pointing out that these are the checks that people should be capable of doing on their own vehicle. Anyway, each to their own opinion. If you have used this deal and received good service then I'm happy for you.

bloody hell you lot are scaring me. My dad told me the same. But FYI i don't know how to do any of those things....dont be mean...

Can I do this with a motorbike?

Waste of time, booked online last week for a weekend appointment. Reached on time only to be informed that they have cancelled all online booking due to existing work loads!

Would I think of them at my next trouble with car - NO!

Agreed.
All the other things can do yourself.
A multimeter will only show you the voltage of the car battery (between 12-14V).
If it's in between that range then the battery is OK.

However,it will not show if the battery is holding charge.
For that you need special diagnostic equipment which I believe Halfords should have (unless your a car mehanic).

btw The Halfords website says it charges from £9.99 to fit a new battery; from £3.99 to put in a new bulb; from £1,99 to fit new wipers by their 'trained' Halfords staff.

I would happily charge £3.99 for anyone who wants me to put in a new bulb for them

Still is free so is ok.
The ladies or some old dears may find deal useful.

Unless your a woman!

Cannot believe this got hot, if you can't do all of the checks without the battery check I would suggest learning as driving with no oil or water is a disaster and checking lights and wiper blades kids could do it.

If you can't check the oil or top up the screen fluid check your manual or even YouTube can't believe there are video with hundreds of thousands of views on how to check your oil.
