Cheap to buy, expensive to run. Worthwhile anywhere you don't use them much.
Obsolete and soon outlawed. Save your money by paying more for LED!
Why? Just why these days? Who would buy these?

A 50W equiv. GU10 LED costs about £1 I reckon (Certainly available in say poundland, or Screwfix etc for this price). Energy use is about 5W on the LED. So that's about a 90% energy saving compared to the halogen on 1 bulb!

Even if Sainsbury's gave these away for free, you would still save loads more money if you bought the LED ones. So they really would have to pay me to take these!

Plus LED run much, much, much cooler so are generally the safer option. (You can burn your hand on a 50W halogen).

LEDs let you choose your colour (eg cool white or warm).
LED bulbs (in theory) last longer.

downsides: LEDs are harder to dim (need a trailing edge dimmer).

These aren't GU10, they're MR16 (or GU5.3) - so 12V rather than 240V. Less common and rather more expensive in LED (typically £2 each), but still well worth upgrading. Depending on the installation, it may be worth ripping out the transformer and converting the setup to GU10.

Totally agree. The GU10 fittings are quite cheep so well worth doing these days.
