Well this looks like an interesting thing. I have had a quick look around and this seems like the lowest price you can get. Turn any HDMI display into a quadcore Windows 8.1 PC for £142 quid? Think I am going to take the plunge here unless anyone has had some bad experiences or know where it can be had for less?

Seems like a good price for what you're getting in such a small package.
I assume you could make a very nice (but expensive!) tiny HTPC with this for DLNA streaming.

Heard a lot about these coming out, going to be a huge number soon with varying specs etc so if you aren't in a rush it'd possibly be best to wait. Heat added though looks like a decent buy.

Astonishing product from China, so small and potential to integrate better in a Windows network environment.

not just that, is so blooming small!

Yep I think we are going to see a whole bunch of these devices hitting the market this year. Heading them up is the Meego t10 liliputing.com/201…tml

Can be got for under a £100 on Ebay. No idea how well they perform but worth holding off to see what happens

Just like what happened with the android sticks a few years ago, there will be a flood of similar devices (cheap atom + free windows) very soon. If you search Ebay for this cpu (Z3735F) you'll find it used in a wide range of devices; smartphones, tablets and media players.

For example this box with very similar specs for 78£ (from China, so there may be a customs charge).

Its is also (almost) the same chip as used in the Linx tablets, which costs 79£. Considering that that tablet adds a screen and a battery, I'd expect that stick PCs with this chip can go even cheaper.

There's a free version, must consult Google later

Really like the look of these. Assuming it can handle streaming 1080p MKV files I think I'll be replacing my HTPC with one

1. it is not loaded with windows 8 with bing!
I have OEM version of that mini PC ordered on Alliexpress before new year and it came preloaded with normal windows 8 and it was in trial mode!!! many ppl on cnx-software and reddit are saying that they had the same situation in product description there was info that it is preloaded with free windows but it was not.
2. right now there is no support for android or Linux on this mini pc, uefi bios is locked and cant load nothing else then windows 8.
3. there is no easy activator for windows 8 that would work the same way as on standard - full size pc, thats info fot ppl that already ordered that :P

ps. i bought mine from china for 146$ not £141 thats almost 1/3 price less

Love the Pi, but this is an entirely different solution. Do you go round saying "Moto G" on all phone deals too?

I'd get a Fire TV over a Pi, then after that.. I'd get a Razor Forge (probably won't see it in the UK unfortunately, import only) - Powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 quad-core CPU and an Adreno 420 GPU, and contains 2GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage. Immense for 100$... Even at £100.

similar spec about £70 delivered. if by courier, not mail, in about 5 days,. tv sticks die often specially if using cables as can't handle power variations well:
aliexpress.com/who…ows

the small import vat is extremely rare when buying gadgets direct in my experience, ask them to write on the box $20 value anyway. make sure sellers aren't new and have feedback but your money is safe and with alixp or dhgate etc. till you're happy.

for kodi (xbmc) use, whether it's android or windows, buy boxes with external power: ie much better builds, research brand and model before buying. windows boxes:

The zotac that uses the same chip claims to do so here - techreport.com/new…ket - for simlar cash you can build a Gigabyte Brix NUC box with memory and a small SSD to pop SteamOS onto and know it'll work.

Can anyone download this OS (ie for a spare PC I have)?

I turned my hdmi display into a quad core windows 8.1 pc for £59 and got a tablet into the bargain too so I can't see the point of this really. The tablet even had the same cpu and storage although only 1gb of ram but there are 2gb models that still undercut this comfortably and have the added benefit of being a tablet too.

I'm assuming these things work with any Bluetooth keyboard/mouse?

I have a tablet with the same cpu, the integrated graphics offer hardware video decoding so it will play most things you can throw at it without breaking a sweat. I hook my tablet up to my tv and play 40gb blue ray files and the cpu will throttle down to around 500mhz and show about 13% usage.

A big advantage for these or any similar z3735f based device is that they will output at 24p for smooth playback of movies, something that android is incapable of.
