700-watt, 7.2-channel, networked AVR with AirPlay and Bluetooth connectivity

Its 7.2-channel A/V receiver is equipped with HARMAN TrueStream Bluetooth® connectivity, Apple AirPlay, vTuner™ Internet radio and DLNA® 1.5 technology, giving you multiple options for streaming audio. And with six 3D-ready HDMI® inputs, including one equipped for MHL to connect mobile devices, and two HDMI outputs, you’ll have more than enough ways to connect to everything you love – movies, HDTV, sports, MHL-equipped devices and the Roku Streaming Stick™ dongle.

While the AVR 171’s connectivity alone makes it desirable, its sound really strikes a chord. It’s the first Harman Kardon AVR to feature our exclusive Natural Sound Processing (NSP), which creates a rich, enveloping surround-sound from any source – particularly with two-channel streaming content. And its EzSet/EQ™ III system automatically calibrates the AVR to your speakers and listening environment. The AVR 171 is light, too, thanks to HARMAN GreenEdge™ certification – delivering all the power you need with low environmental impact. For those who want it all, the AVR 171 can’t be matched.

Great price

Possibly the best priced receiver of all time when features, power and audio quality are taken into account?

That's the review I saw, why does this have to come up for sale just when xmas presents need bought? I SUPPOSE my ancient SR4300 is a bit long in the tooth...

Buy it for someone you live with!

Hmmm, the better half would be able to figure out how to switch it on I guess, I don't think she'd appreciate the bargain though :-\

Get a harmony remote to control it all too -

Get a harmony remote to control it all too - that's how my technophobic other half manages to get it all working

How does this compare to an Onkyo (never heard of them!) 616 or 626?

I am looking for a wireless system as I don't want to channel into walls or bring up the carpet. Any suggestions please for a good cinema system under the £500 mark. I already have a Sony blu ray player. Could this HK receiver be matched with wireless speakers or is there a good wireless all in one system around?

Really appreciate your feedback. Thanks in advance.

The Onyo has component inputs that will allow you to output over HDMI, this doesn't. Onkyo doesn't have airplay. This amp from the OP is great - just no good to me as I need to output from the wii to a projector that is cabled in already (10m hdmi cable behind coving, through ceiling and joists etc - no chance of running component cables that far!). My current Onkyo is a 414 which is very good but doesn't have 2 x hdmi out or ability to output component over hdmi. Not even had it a year and it's looking to be replaced when funds permit. Can't help you on the wireless speakers bit - all of my stuff is cabled but hidden (coving is wonderful stuff!) :-)

Looks fine, are speakers plugs are banana jack?

Looking at the picture, i'd say yes.

It's as if they planned to knock some money off as soon as you start spending for Christmas!

Shame no Wi-Fi included, almost ordered .

Thanks for the post OP, my old Onkyo 5.1 gave up the ghost a few weeks ago and have been researching receivers and pondering between getting a used one (was offered a Denon 1910 from a friend for £100) or go with something on a Richer Sounds deal like this.

The main reasons this is a good unit for me however is the size, I have an IKEA Lack TV unit and the space is abouot 150 mm high, the Onkyo I had only just fitted in and I think it could be part of the reason it died (it did cost me £10 some 2 years ago, I saved it from a dusty death at work), heat and near Xbox which is basically a fan heater! This unit at 121mm high will keep things neat and I wont have to buy extra racks etc and it has a really great spec list. I don't need composite, don't need WiFi, was after at least two optical in's + coaxial, and preferably 7.1 this has all that plus more and looks so sleak too! Seriously considering getting this unit!! Heat added!

One question though, does anyone know if this does or will support Spotify, either through the unit/TV display or from iPhone to unit? Thanks

Don't know much about this receiver, but if I didn't already have one I'd definitely take the plunge. If only it cropped up 6 months ago. Instead I've got a Yamaha 673 which is twice the bloody size. This AV has everything you need, and nothing you really don't (like 6 video inputs) and to top it all off, it looks fantastic.

Great spec, and price - heat added.
Off to my local Richer Sounds for a closer look.....could be time to replace my aging STR-DB790!

It's missing component inputs and built in Wi-Fi, important considerations for some people.

Thanks Liverpool_Bear, I just read that before you posted, it seems it will be from iPhone to unit but that covers it for me. For £275 inc 5 Year Guarantee this is looking far too good!

I think the Denon 1910 will have a better sound and maybe bit more power as its bigger amp and uses 460 watt power where as this is 320 watt though don't have as much stuff and does not do 3D. Though this is my amp and really happy with it.

Does anyone know if this could work with Android as well as Apple Airplay?

Does anyone know if one of the optical inputs can be used as an output? I need to output to a 5.1 headset for use with my PS3.

Okay I have an old STR DB1080 with no HDMI inputs and its just 6.1 surround sound DTS / DD 5.1.

sony.co.uk/sup…als

Apart from the fact this has loads of extras and 7.1 True HD etc how does the sound quality compare?

Thanks.

Good specification but it's slightly surprising that it isn't wirelessly networkable

Go for a known brand like Sony, never heard of Harmon Kardon.

(i have to say, thats one of the best looking AV receivers i have EVER seen!)

dear god, NEVER heard of them?!?!?!
Travesty

Im still chugging along with an AVR 505 Le this would be a nice upgrade at this price.

WHY SO COMPELLING?!?
I was toying with the idea of buying a receiver / surround speaker setup for my old Panasonic plasma for a while now, and thanks to you guys, I have a receiver on the way, and no idea what to hook it up to.

This would go lovely with my PS4 however that has already drained my finances enough before Christmas

There are so many variables that no one could say if it would or would not sound better.

As much as I see these things keep coming up at good prices's, I still can't bring myself to upgrade my 10 year old Denon AVR3802, It's all wired in to my converted garage and only worth about 60 quid second hand, Hasn't got all the fancy gadgets on, But still does the one thing I want it to, And that is sounds fantastic turned up, Which is all I really need or want from an AV Receiver.

If your Sony still makes you smile, Just stick with it.

Yep, my thoughts exactly....I think my imminent PS4 will be a nice companion for one of these.
Off to look at one locally in an hour or so, may well come back a few £s lighter....

like the bit where it says 4k ready - five grand for a new 4k tv and then £250 on a cheap amp oO

Very tempted to upgrade (downgrade) my pioneer amp for this. The 2 outputs will mean I no longer need a splitter to go to tv and projector and the bluetooth would be nice for playing music from my phone. Saying that, I assume selling my amp will be a pain as who buys second hand amps? and it may actually sound slightly worse (btw if anyone is buying a surround system and speakers my advice is to always spend more money on the speakers if you want better quality sound - I tested about 5 amps from £200-£1000 using a set of ~£400 speakers against a set of ~£1000 speakers, The speakers made an immediate and massive improvement but the amps only had a very slight improvement in comparison)

I've got one of these in the loft - horrible colour. Changed it for a 3d amp with inferior sound oO

What, The champagne Gold, I've got the Denon and Marantz Amp, Plus Marantz CD in the gold, Looks gorgeous, Well, A hell of a lot better than the late to the party gold iPhone 5.

In 3 or 4 years time 4k may be the norm and most people don't like buying amps as often as new tvs
