700-watt, 7.2-channel, networked AVR with AirPlay and Bluetooth connectivity

Its 7.2-channel A/V receiver is equipped with HARMAN TrueStream Bluetooth® connectivity, Apple AirPlay, vTuner™ Internet radio and DLNA® 1.5 technology, giving you multiple options for streaming audio. And with six 3D-ready HDMI® inputs, including one equipped for MHL to connect mobile devices, and two HDMI outputs, you’ll have more than enough ways to connect to everything you love – movies, HDTV, sports, MHL-equipped devices and the Roku Streaming Stick™ dongle.

While the AVR 171’s connectivity alone makes it desirable, its sound really strikes a chord. It’s the first Harman Kardon AVR to feature our exclusive Natural Sound Processing (NSP), which creates a rich, enveloping surround-sound from any source – particularly with two-channel streaming content. And its EzSet/EQ™ III system automatically calibrates the AVR to your speakers and listening environment. The AVR 171 is light, too, thanks to HARMAN GreenEdge™ certification – delivering all the power you need with low environmental impact. For those who want it all, the AVR 171 can’t be matched.

can this be used for home cinema set up?

you are clearly not the finest one

can this be used for home cinema set up?

yes.

there was a huge thread around xmas for this reciever at this price

Ooohhh it's really sexy

Can these people actually produce real hifi ?

Iv always had them down with bose and others who prefer to offer form over function

it does sound good from the spec

Don't get it... This has been at this price since Boxing Day. Although a way better amp for only a little more is the Denon avr-x2000.

Looks good, sounds like crap.

Depends if you want style over substance on your A/V rack.

isn't this just a glorified JBL?

Anyone know if this does the job of a hdmi matrix? It does have 2 outputs..

i.e. would I be able to set up two rooms with this and watch all my sky/ps4 etc

Was £279.99 last night as i was checking it out.
Would get this as good reviews but the speaker connections are different so cannot use my current speakers, drat.
Seems a decent upgrade from my LG set up.

£80 "only a little more" ? lol

I would personally buy a pioneer with the same money, at least then you know you are getting something of equal or better quality. I am still using a Pioneer AV from over 13 years ago in one of my studios.

Pioneer vsx-923 for £50 extra (£299) at Richer sounds gets my vote. Brought it for £350. Excellent amp from a reputable brand.

You know I was looking at that too, and it has so many HDMI ports too can't really go wrong with that really

nice sofa

Hi
@Bully
I bought Denon avr-x2000 for 249 in richer sounds store yesterday. I thought about this hk171 but he doesn't 4k upscaling.

I was thinking it looks more like a pouffe.

This Karman Hardon looks a classy looking amp.

Easily best amp for the money is the yamaha 675 for 349.. Just redyced from 499 as new model due soon

Mine is powering 2000 worth of kef and rel speakers sounds awesome.. Currently 5.2 but soon 7.2

Ultimately what amp you get depends on what speakers you have

Out of our 10 or so Harmon kardon units I've seen go through work. I think we've seen a 90% failure rate by 6 months old. If you want airplay in a receiver go Pioneer denon or marantz

Of course you have, because mainstream brands make lots of models year after year which have a 90% failure rate within six months since, as everyone knows, those companies like to spend more than they make per unit just fulfilling statutory warranty repairs.

So you're saying that to get a better amp than the one in the post you need to spend £100 more? Fine praise indeed.

Concerned by this having a fan, when Onkyo started to put fans in their AVRs people complained they were noisy. Nothing more annoying than a 40mm fan whirring away oO

Could this be used as 2.1 system? I have no way running cables for the surround speakers at the moment

Specs look good on paper. But being H-K I'm sure it sounds ****. Then again if you don't have a good speaker setup it won't probably make much difference. And it is cheap.

how is this compared to denon 2000 and Yamaha 673 which were in same price band at richer Sounds?

I bought one of these before Christmas and the sound quality is very good, they are running custom made speakers and the previous amp driving them was an old school Marantz.

The 2nd hdmi is an exact copy of the first and if you're using the speaker outputs from the amp you won't get audio out of the 2nd hdmi.. so it's a bit rubbish and I got around it by using an hdmi splitter from the sky box before going into the amp.. it's definitely not got matrix style functionality.

gets a good review. have an older model of hk amp, very nice unit and great sound.

yes people are right, a more expensive amp might sound better, but you would hope so if your pay more. but if your on a budget, or don't have the highest quality speakers, you would never be able to tell the difference. Just to confirm that I also have for myself a Yamaha amp, Bose life style and Sonos setup. yes the Bose is far better then the hk amp, but its also 10x the price so I would hope it would!

The spec for this money is very impressive,

For that price you can get denon avr x2000 which sounds much better.

Was this not up nearly a month ago?

Are you using doorbell wire for speaker cable? This manages to sound better than my Marantz SR4300 with stereo audio and even streaming Internet radio sounds fantastic to me and I've been in the recording studio hearing uncompressed audio!

Oh, you can get £10 off from the VIP club in Richer Sounds btw.

After months of comparing AV receivers I went with this and haven't looked back. For £250 it has everything you'll ever need. I've already filled all 6 HDMI ports, so any receiver with less would've been a pain.

Only thing I wish I could do is have the TV signal go through the receiver so I don't have to use my TV remote to switch between TV and HDMI.
