Hasn’t it been this price for some time?
Same price it's been for ages I'm afraid.
This isn’t an offer. It’s been this price since released. It was £19.99 on 08/06/17

It was definitely £19.99 in March and June last year, I’m holding out
In 4k, perhaps, glory...maybe not. It's compressed video and low quality sound. I'll stick to the discs, thanks.

The hardware isn't capable of handling high quality sound at this time. There also isn't enough bandwidth on most domestic connections to handle high quality video or sound.
This is just RRP - I’m sure it will drop to £19.99 again before long

Apparently Atmos will be available and is not due to a hardware issue. Yes, internet speeds are an issue which is swings and roundabouts as to which provider is used and the availability of speed, this will only improve in the future. On the whole most comparisons on picture quality only show a slightly lesser quality from the ATV, we all accept this as it is convenient and cheaper to run.

Atmos isn't a quality standard. It's not a measure of high quality audio at all, it's just ceiling speakers. Whether those speakers emit good quality or poor quality depends on the source. Apple TV isn't capable of high quality audio, don't be duped by Atmos marketing.

It's true what your say though, Apple TV is lower quality but cheaper. You get what you pay for in this world. In general, 1080p Blu-ray disc is higher quality overall than 4k on Apple TV. You can buy the blu-ray box set for the same price as this and enjoyed full resolution uncompressed audio.

If you want the best picture and audio, I’d suggest paying £70 to go watch it at a cinema with a live orchestra
I thought this said (4K - Dobby Vision)

I take it you haven’t watched any Apple TV 4K HDR movies at all then? The audio aspect, I agree with (although it sounds great to me on my Sonos). The video aspect, though, you’re talking nonsense.

If you're using Sonos, you've never heard high quality audio. ATV 4K HDR is OK, but lacks the bitrate required for a quality video stream. Maybe you've never tried 4K UHD Blu-ray to compare?

It's important to note a lot of films aren't 4k anyway, they're from 2k sources. There is a website dedicated to this:

realorfake4k.com/

If you look at a recent release like Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, you might expect it to be a quality 4k release. It's not, it's upscaled 2k.

realorfake4k.com/my-…-2/

So if you watch that on Apple TV, it will likely look no worse than anywhere else. The best you'll ever get is a 4k upscale.

However, compare to a genuine 4k source and they are worlds apart as the ATV can't cope with the bitrate needed for a full source.

I have come from previously owning a top shop pioneer amp with full Dali 5.1 surround setup when I had my £1000 pioneer bluray player. I then upgraded to an Xbox with my sonos gear and bought about 30 4K blurays. These are now long sold, I bought the ATV 4K and never looked back. There are countless video comparisons on YouTube and other sources outlining the small difference between digital and disc, and can attest to this, having owned both. Maybe on a projector or larger TV than my 58” panny there may be more of a difference. For me, though, the difference doesn’t warrant the huge difference in cost of films.

With regards to your “it’s not really 4K” argument, watch Pacific Rim or other reference upscales then come back to me. There are good 2k upscales, and bad native 4K releases.

If you're comparing quality using an old Xbox, I won't waste my time discussing further with you. Bad source = bad picture, Xbox 4K problems well documented. I can see why the ATV felt like a good substitute - the Xbox can't handle decent audio either.

If you're happy with it, that's all that counts. Enjoy.

“An old Xbox?” I was using a one S, now have a one X. Xbox performed fine as 4K player, the only documented issue was colours not as accurate with HDR. Handled audio like a dream aswell, transcoding brilliantly.

The comparison videos are using an Oppo 4K bluray player. I realise that the Xbox would never be as good as a stand-alone player.

If you want to spend £1000s on your gear then enjoy, I didn’t see the point in having what I had due to the small difference. Horses for courses.

You lost me at "transcoding". That's where all the quality gets removed to allow it to be compatible with a soundbar which claims to be advanced but will only support connections from the 1990s.

rock on bud, I love my Sonos, it matches my previous Dali Zensor setup even when it was “transcoding” DTS HD, MA and all of the other lossy formats. You enjoy your gear and I will certainly enjoy mine
