If it is 'solid pine' it seems pointless to put an oak effect laminate on top of it

Mmmm must admit I did wonder about that and why the hell you would put laminate over solid pine as the rest of the pine furniture I have isn't laminated but well sod it I've ordered it and if I don't like it it can go back

Mind you on the other hand I've just bought it to go under the TV in the kitchen as I've been looking for a cupboard to put a Blu-ray player, ps4 etc in in kitchen so that they had a bit of protection from "steam" (and more to the point cats) and didn't want one with glass doors so was going to drill holes in the back of this to feed the cables through so not really that worried if it's laminated as long as it's sturdy with no MDF in sight...lol...

It isn't laminated, it will be an oak coloured stain. It's to make it look like like oak, simple! After all, it's made of pine, i.e redwood, which is a softwood, and nobody wants furniture made from softwood!

Oaks in big style...laminate will give the look of a more expensive piece

If it's simply a stain, it won't make the surface any harder and maybe the colour will be more like oak but the grain of the wood will be pine (totally different)
Pine furniture old and new is popular everywhere, surely

Yes, I'm well aware of this, I make furniture for a living. It is a stain. It is blatantly obvious from the photo. You would never laminate timber anyway due to movement. I personally wouldn't buy pine furniture and being in the business myself I know a lot of people won't. That said, for the price it isn't bad. This unit is an oakish colour but the grain will look nothing like oak.

My OH insists on only buying pine furniture...don't know why and never asked as I so can't be bothered to enter the strange world of his thinking and why it is has to be pine...I'd probably be sitting here this time next year still listening to him explain...didn't used to mind when pine was quite cheap but it has certainly shot up in price over the past few years oO

As I said though I've only bought it to stick in the kitchen and don't expect it to be the highest quality in the world...the "is it suitable for what I want it for" and "reasonable price" combo were what I was looking for...and of course pine to keep the OH happy

For anyone who likes pine this looks a good buy. I couldn't make it from for that price!

I'm not surprised. You'd probably use solid sheets
This will probably be made from strips of pine about 1" in width stuck together (not on the front panels it seems) but the other solid surfaces. This is quite common nowadays.
