If it has a memory card slot. That should make it a decent buy.

yes it has an SD slot up to 32g

Looks decent but its a bit sketchy on the information.

What frame rate?
How long does battery last?

Won't most of the IR from this camera's LEDs get reflected straight back off the windscreen as glare?

@bellamy_47 Thanks for adding the details; I was in a rush when I posted the deal.

I brought a dash cam from eBay recently. Its pretty basic. It does the job but the only throw back I would say is that the battery lasts 40mins so I operate it mostly with the charger attached.

I would consider the battery life before buying a dash cam. This one looks pretty good (looks better then my one in appearance).

5% TopCashBack too, FWIW.

this same one is on ebay uk seller £16.99 free delivery

It could be one of these:- https://dashcamtalk.com/k6000/

The case is the same anyway, but the internals could be entirely different.

If it is the 1080p is interpolated, so you'd be better off setting it to 720p.

Like I said it doesn't mention IR illumination, just IR night vision, maybe this means 'passive' night vision using the near IR ambient light to create the image?

Have you a link/number for the item ?? Thanks in advance

I just bought this off groupon this morning , wish I had looked on eBay / amazon 1st, but looks like a ok camera x

I've got one and the night vision is useless, just 2 led's to light up with a white light. Day vision is excellent though.

Yes.

But, most cheap dash cams have them anyway. There's usually a way to turn them off.

its 1024p native with two IR leds that are pretty much useless as they reflect of the windscreen. It work reasonable well is daylight and like most of them has some issues with night vision (exposure settings as too sensitive to on coming headlights and not quite good enough to see the number plate of the car your following or stuff in the shadows google it there are video of it up there. for the price its a bargain ive seen £200 dash cams with the same issues. Biggest downside its its BIG takes up too much space and short battery life you have to use it with the charger.

yeah I have this one. the battery is quite useless. has to be plugged in all the time. there is no option I can find to turn off the IR. its detailed in the instructions, but the menu is missing the option.

other than that its perfectly good at recording the antics of BMW drivers

depends on the angle of the windscreen, in a car it would reflect onto the dash in most cases

the camera itself is absolute garbage either way, whacked mine straight on eBay

it's one click while powered on to toggle the ir, it is stated in the book

one click of which button?

whydoiwastemytimehere

its 1024p native

If it is a k6000, the review of which I posted above, then it is built around a Novatek NT96220 video processor, which is actually 720p native @ 30 fps and records in MJPEG.

Review:- https://dashcamtalk.com/k6000/
Dashcam processor specs:- https://dashcamtalk.com/dash-cam-processors/

The best budget Dashcam is probably still the G1WH for around £30. True 1080p @ 30fps with a pretty decent 1/3" sensor and uses H264 compression, so you'll get double the recording time on a 32gb card:- dashcamtalk.com/g1w/

i've had a few of these cams but i guess to buy you should invest in a decent cam.
I bought mine from these guys.
idashcam.co.uk/pro…am/

Thnx Melted for clarifications.
I got one to try out. used it at 1024p, hence my thinking it was its native res.
Found the night time Suburban use it didn't give me the quality of pics I was looking for so ebay-ed it. Although ive not seen any that do dynamic EV well enough, maybe its just asking too much of the tech at the moment.

Received mine yesterday and I've just had time to play with it. It's OK for the money, but not really good enough IME. I've been out in broad daylight with it and still can't make out numberplates on other vehicles even below 30mph unless I'm queuing behind them. Surely you need to make out the registration numbers on other vehicles if the videos are to be any use at all in a dispute? I've seen far clearer videos on YouTube but I guess those cameras cost far more.

Now to decide whether to return it or eBay it.

It is nice having really clear footage including the number plates, and a camera with better image quality and no gaps in recordings like the g1wh only costs about a tenner more, but whether you can read the registration or not, the footage will still show who did what in the event of an accident. I'd suggest that being able to read the registration is only really essential if the other driver fails to stop and exchange details, or you want to record while parked. I suppose in the event that the other driver doesn't stop, if you catch the registration yourself, you could read it out aloud so it's recorded on the sound track.

It's a good idea to use your mobile to get some photos at a scene of an accident of both cars and the other driver if possible (in case there's some dispute about who was driving), anyway.

If you haven't done so already, I'd suggest trying the camera set to 720p rather than 1080p as the image quality at it's native resolution may well be slightly better.

I tried setting the camera to record at 720p but it didn't noticeably improve the quality of the footage.

Can anyone recommend a website where I can buy a genuine G1W? There are so many fakes on eBay and Amazon. I'd rather pay a touch more for a UK seller with a guarantee rather than chuck £30 at a Chinese ebayer.

You may find some information about sellers in the g1w dashcam forum here:- https://forum.dashcamtalk.com/forums/g1wx.39/

A quick look found one g1wh that's fulfilled by amazon here:- amazon.co.uk/Mon…1wh so should be easy to return if fake or faulty - 3 bad reviews, but two of those are just complaining because it doesn't come bundled with a sd card. Don't like the branding, but it could be tapped over with a bit of black insulation tape along with the white led cover so it is less noticeable from outside.

I got my g1wh from china - bangood.com, (about 28 quid) , it was genuine, but there's still the risk that you might get a faulty one and have to send it back to China at some cost (and as it contains a lithum battery, that could be expensive), plus a small risk of customs/royal mail fees when it is delivered. DX also sell the g1wh and have a uk forwarding address for cheaper returns, but last time I checked were almost as expensive as buying from uk.

@melted thanks for those tips, I'll follow them up.

Just tried to raise a return at Groupon (giving reason "item is not as described" as I don't believe it records in 1080p) and Groupon told me to keep it and they'll give me a refund anyway!

I'll probably use it as a cheap rear-facing camera in my wife's new Nissan Leaf, coming tomorrow (see other HukD thread!)

Forgot to mention the 5v power adaptors that are supplied with the g1w & g1wh tend to interfere with FM radio, so if you go for either you should budget for a better quality usb power adaptor plus a usb to mini usb cable.

Can anyone tell me the difference between the G1W, the G1W-H and the G1W-C? There seems to be lots of them on Amazon, some branded (eg Monkon) and some not.

Plus there's an M03L and M05L, from Monkon, but I can't find any differences between them except a fraction in the price.

The G1WH is all black and is supposed to have a wider angle lens than the G1W although I think there's really not much difference in lens angle with most G1W versions/clones. The G1W has a shiny chrome ring around the lens and the case comes in various colours. Both use a lithium battery (around 200mAh) to allow them to shut down cleanly when the power is cut. The G1W-C is similar to the G1W but uses a super capacitor instead of a battery - super capacitors are more tolerant of heat but have very low capacity. All three use the same Novatek NT96650 video processor and the Aptina AR0330 image sensor (about 3.5MP).

The G1W seems to be the most widely cloned and "faked" of the three (probably because the Technet review made it so popular), with more substandard versions where a manufacture has substituted an inferior image sensor and processor (usually a lower end Novatek). The fakes usually record at 25fps in 1080p (interpolated) (30fps in 720p) and produce .avi files (the very worst using M-JPEG compression), the genuine ones record 30fps at 1080p (genuine 1080p) and produce .mov files.

I went for the G1WH because being all black, it is the least noticeable through the windscreen, and also at the time I bought mine everyone buying them seemed to be receiving ones with the right hardware in it, even when the PCBs differed.

I've no idea about the M03/5L.

good one for try

HELP! Just got one of these.Unpacked it,turned it on,the menu is all in Chinese. Probably tells me how to change language, but IT'S IN CHINESE.
Any advice gratefully received, preferably in English. Shame to return it without even trying it out. Thanks

I've been using this for a couple of days with the cigarette lighter fine but the cable is rather long and has to be plugged in between the seats.

I have just got myself a mini usb to usb cable to charge it and used it for the first time but it goes into usb transfer mode and doesnt record.

Is there anyway to charge via usb and still record?

I take it that you have it powered from the car radio usb connection.

You'd need to disconnect the two data connection wires, so just the power + ground is connected. Either cut them in the cable or you could try taping over the two data pins of the USB plug on your cable (the centre two pins I think).
