It's a very good lens and I've used it with an F1 but this is wasted money on a DSLR.

There are better AF standard lenses for all other apertures for Nikon DSLR for definite but if you only want a sliver in focus and nice out of focus or maybe you still use 35mm. It is lovely and smooth and I like MF and it feels good and using such a fine tool that when I was a kid I could never have imagined to actually hold and use and see the results...maybe it's just me

F1.2 Would anything be in focus shooting that shallow?

An affordable, high quality lens that’s perfect for creative portraits and low-light photos. Blur backgrounds to make your subject stand out, and enjoy smooth near-silent STM focus… Read more

I have this lens and it is fantastic. It has a fixed focal length so if you want to zoom in then you have to use your feet. But the picture quality blows the two kit lenses out of the water. The 1.8 apature gives excellent bokeh to make your subject stand out from the background. You can also get very creative with this lens.

Its different to your 18-55 and 55-20 kit lenses. First is focal length. 50 mm has 1.8 whereas your lenses can go upto 3.2 least. Lower f values means better blurred background aka bokeh. 50 mm is does not have zoom so u need to very close to subject. It's good for portrait and in low light...hope that gives you an idea..

If you live within range of one of the stores here www.cameraworld.co.uk pop in and chat with them. Prices are usually around the Amazon mark but might be worth it for the advice.

The focal length is a property of the lens and nothing to do with the body, so the 50mm figure is directly comparable with the values of your other lenses. This lens has a fixed zoom level close to the max zoom on your 18-55. This means it can be tricky to frame shots indoors as you need to stand back a bit more. However, forcing you to stand back flattens facial features and leads to some truly beautiful portraits. The large aperture and shallow depth of field help in this regard too. This lens lets you take the photo you imagined. Crop factor is only important if you want to know what focal length would give you the same field of view on a 35mm camera... Useful if you have experience with several cameras, but a somewhat random complication otherwise!

And I remember when my grandad used to give me Werthers Originals...

There is an obvious difference between the 8th gen coming out and previous. Competition.

OK. That makes things clear. I think.

This discussion still going on? It really has nothing to do with mac v windows. Both "just work" so it is best to go with your preference. That doesn't mean I think the air is a good deal though, it is old tech for a price it was worth new to anyone that doesn't care about OS.

Ah ok that's why then, I don't use cloud storage as it's no good to me, I spend a lot of time on train and planes for work.

It was a few years ago but I just found the registration page and put the serial no's in. It worked. Good luck.

How did you manage to register lenses on the their website? I'm trying to register one and can't find the option for lenses, only things like cameras etc

Got mine new from Eglobal for £105 new. Perfect.

Now up to £135.00. But still a great deal

I had Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM which was released the same year so I guess it similar. Even I read some bad reviews back then mostly based on "that's the quite old lens", I really liked it. The image was sharp, the focus was good and fast and the only thing I think I noticed was bit washed out colours. Now when I think twice, that might be caused by haze that appear on long distance shots. Although, I think you should be aware that Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III doesn't have stabilisation which is really needed thing on telephoto lenses (unless you know you're not going to shoot from hand)

All sounds a bit iffy to me. Here's what Panasonic say.. http://www.panasonic.com/uk/greyimportproducts.html

There are dangers of buying grey, but servicing isn't usually a problem. HDEW and Panamoz have many customers who have had repairs done by fixation/Nikon. eg https://www.flickr.com/groups/35034364564@N01/discuss/72157681852131880/ This doesn't mean that buying grey is risk free. You could get defective product (eg. failed the QC, and sold of cheaply). You could get a supplier who hasn't paid the import duty. etc. That's why I'd stick to HDEW, Panamoz or DigitalRev.

There is no guarantee that they will do repairs or servicing.

Techinthebasket seem a lot cheaper, anyone used them?

Yes they are grey. But hdewcameras have a decent reputation, and nikon uk will do repairs and servicing

Yes, these are Grey. Don't be too put off by that tho. I use one of these for wildlife etc. its a great camera for this, and i'm not yet convinced by the D500s ability to crop as well as the D7200. Beats my D810 and D4 in this area anyway

Very very powerful camera for the price, is this a grey import?

Savvy piece . I was enlightened by the specifics - Does someone know where my assistant could possibly access a fillable permit search version to edit ?

D3300 has a stereo mic jack. No mic jack on the D3400.

£359 here.. http://www.e-infin.com/uk/item/3068/nikon_d3400_digital_slr_camera_+_af-p_18-55mm_f/3.5-5.6g_vr_lens?gclid=CLG7kqm3-84CFdRuGwodaHMB_Q

At about £10 more from Clifton Cameras I'd go for a D5300 with 18-55mm lens. https://www.cliftoncameras.co.uk/Nikon-D5300-18-55-VR-II-Kit/Colour/Black With the D5300 you get a larger, fully articulated LCD with higher resolution, more focus points, AE bracketing, built in GPS as well as more built-in effects such as HDR and time-lapse recording. Does the D3400 have a microphone port? The D3300 didn't but I'm not sure about the new model. The D5300 is a bit heavier than the D3400 and the battery life is much improved, but in most other respects the D5300 is either as good or better for not much more money. EDIT - Actually D5300 even cheaper with AF-P 18-55 just £385 + delivery at Hdew: http://www.hdewcameras.co.uk/nikon-d5300-kit-af-p-18-55-vr-4216-p.asp - that is a way better deal.

£405 now

@SaxonStar - 50mm is a bit long for indoors on an apsc camera. The nikon 35mm 1.8 is a very good standard and a bargain too.

Thanks for that, I think I will look at getting a new lens. Great picture by the way!

I recommend the 35mm for a mixture of everyday use and standard casual portraiture. I went around all of South America and Europe with a Tokina 11-16mm and the Nikon 35mm as my two travel lenses and wasn't disappointed. I tried a 50mm but it just felt slightly too long for everyday use, although it was possible to make shots look quite intimate using it. Best way to find out which one works best for you might be to stick the kit lens on the focal length of each for a day or two.
