This is a fairly new product and tastes delicious, I will never buy the old ketchup again. I expect people who haven't tasted it will vote it cold, but I have just bought 5 bottles in my local store and will go back for more before the offer ends. It's £1.75 in Tesco and other stores.

Here's an article from The Daily Mirror in case you haven't noticed it on the shelves before:

Heinz unveil posh gourmet version of its famous tomato sauce.
By Ruki Sayid 8/04/2008
Ketchup giant Heinz is shaking up its greasy spoon image with a posh version of its famous tomato sauce. The gourmet mix of a dozen plump tomatoes, sea salt, cayenne pepper and Demerara sugar is aimed at foodies with sophisticated tastes. But, with a £1.75 price tag, the Special Blend - which comes in a traditional glass bottle - is three times the price of the standard sauce. It hits the shelves in two weeks time and has taken chefs a year to perfect.

If you are already hooked like me, enjoy!

Has been a quid for weeks now in asda, but I must agree it's the best tasting ketchup.

It's an adults version of ketchup, less sugary more spicy. It's out to rival the tiptree version. Definitely has a place, and good at a quid.

Sounds interesting... will look out for this.

Just ate a fried egg sandwich covered in it... absolute heaven!

sounds like my kind of ketchup

I tried a bottle of this, its ok but nowhere near the tiptree stuff for taste. They probable use the same ingredients as other Heinz ketchup but in different proportions.

Good at this price though.

we had a massive family bbq 2 month ago and did blind taste tests 4 fun- this vs smart price ktchup and garlic heinz ketchup- non were guessed correct but everybody said this one was sp ketchup which was gutted as i paid full whack we did just for fun but was at least 20 people there

This stuff is nice.
However I've noticed that in Tesco this item is listed as "Discontinued" and reduced - this is in at least three stores I've been in.
Is it possible this stuff isn't going to be around that much longer?

I go for quantity not quality, buy the Asda Smart Price, 19p for 750ml, then pour 3rd of a bottle of Tabasco sauce in, can't beat it!

Either that or it isn't selling very well so Tescos are not stocking it. But I can't imagine that, as Tesco's are doing their own version in a similar bottle for £1.49. I would be gutted if they stopped selling it, now that I have found how much I like it.

I suppose if that's the case I would go for this Tiptree stuff. But I don't think it is being discontinued, hopefully Heinz got their market research right. All they need to do is have some smartly dressed rep in a shop dishing out free samples, it would soon sell!

How weird! Actually I just shut my eyes and tasted it (any excuse to eat the stuff). You can't see the deep red colour or the texture, but you can taste the tomatoes strongly, and the rough texture, and it is not so sweet, a little like tomato puree in fact. Maybe people confuse natural and real with raw and cheapo.

Worth a try for a quid. I too go for price rather than quality.

Been that price in our asda for months

Still not tempted to try it though. Sainsburys own brand tom sauce is the best I have ever tried!

I think that this is the best I have had, if I can get it for a quid then all the better!

Banned

i agree with 'greatminds'. Sainsbury's basic tomato ketchup the best i've found and has not got the vinagary taste that other cheapo brands have got and is only 25-29p per 545g bottle.

I think you may be missing something, but you will never know unless you try it. The taste is far more real and wholesome than I have ever experienced.

I would say there is as big a difference with this product and the "normal" ketchups as there is between organic farmhouse cheddar and cheap processed cheese.

For me there still may be a place for the cheap sweet stuff, eg on an occasional chip butty at the seaside, on a rainy day. But on a good bacon sandwich at home, never again, ever!
