enough preserves and e numbers to keep this 6 months :o:o:o:o

I would of thought before purchasing you would have considered that point! and it depends on family size etc etc

its made to go off after 6 weeks, it starts to taste all acidy after that time and water seperates from the sauce. A lot of people dont even know you have to keep it in fridge after opening too.

hp brown sauce?

my in-laws don't read the storage instructions on anything, they keep all condiments in the cupboard, even stuff like jam, salad cream etc. it makes me feel sick just thinking about it, i think people think that because it's kept ambient at the supermarket then that's how you should keep it at home, but i've known things to go off, even in the fridge so god knows what nasties are growing in their condimentrs, yuk

I suspect it's more likely because in the 'old days' tomato ketchup contained preservatives which meant it didn't have to be kept in the fridge.
