First post so hopefully no errors. Helly Hansen buoyancy aid. Normally around £30 but if you play around with sizes and colours some are around the £14-£15 mark on amazon with free delivery. I was only looking as I bought the sevylor tahiti plus kayak HUKD deal. Good brand and could potentially save a life.

Buoyancy aid, not a life jacket. But good price.

Ordered two; one each for the kids! Nice one OP. ☺

But these have a place where life jackets are not appropriate, depending on what you're doing, so your sweeping statement is inaccurate.

If there's a good chance of you falling in the drink as a matter of course, e.g. kayaking or dinghy sailing, get a buoyancy aid. If you're not expecting to fall in, e.g. leisure boating/fishing from a motor boat, get a life jacket. A life jacket will keep your head above water if you're knocked unconscious, but they're really there to protect in the event of an emergency, not for routine floatation. Most modern life jackets trigger (i.e. Inflate) when a sensor is submerged, but once this happens they need a refit of compressed air and a new trigger switch. A buoyancy aid doesn't, by design, keep your head above water, but it helps you float and doesn't need to inflate on contact with water (it's full of buoyant material, not air). Hope that clarifies.

Yes, totally agree, thanks. As you say, these are great if expecting to move in the water/swim, such as windsurfing. My younger kid's one has additional flotation around neck/behind head anyway:

Thanks OP, heat given. I didn't explain my reasoning in my initial post as I was then looking at this deal as needed an additional aid for my older child and didn't want to miss it!

yawn

You dont want a bouyancy aid windsurfing beyond the initial stages , you want a wetsuit

- coming up under the sail wearing a bouyancy aid could, ironically, drown you

I've been there (well, almost, obviously, drowned under the sail as a kid)! My post should have stated "learning windsurfing", but my Swype keyboard sometimes lags a little when I'm going fast!

some of us actually are concerned about childrens welfare

unlike you obviously

As far as I can tell, the main thing is not to take unconscious children in the water in the first place, no?
(_;)

Mine came today and (despite some of the reviews) it is a smashing fit.

Thanks OP.
