HGST Travelstar 7K1000 1TB 72000RPM 2.5" PS3 Internal HDD for £57.90 @ Pixmania

This is a rather specific deal but wanted to share it with anyone who might be interested in upgrading their PS3 hard drive. My 320GB PS3 HDD has been full for a while now, no thanks to all those free games from PSN+, and have been meaning to upgrade it for a while now and after some research I found this drive.
Sure you can buy a Samsung 1TB for a couple of pounds cheaper but this a 7200RPM 2.5" drive which are faster than standard form factor drives and has a 32MB cache unlike the standard 8/16MB. This will make games load slightly faster on the PS3 but also when the PS4 comes around you'll be able to use this same drive and I believe you'll see a bigger difference in load times.
Pixmania just re-lunched their website and are doing free UPS delivery until the 18/09/13.

As I said rather specific deal, but these drive are not made anymore as WD bought Hitachi's HDDs business unfortunately as they used make some of the most reliable drives unlike WD ones. This drive is fantastic as it's faster, more reliable, requires less power and produces less heat than most 2.5" drives but also is a 7200RPM drive which is quite hard to find on this form factor and the next option is the WD Black series which is £64 for 750GB on Ebuyer. I posted this specifically for the PS3 and eventually PS4 but even if you want to upgrade your laptops HDD this is a great option.

This drive is still being made.
HGST is only a subsidiary of WD, they're still making their own drives. This drive hit the market a year after the buyout.

I did a lot of research on Drives over the last few days and bang for buck this is the best you'll get at 1tb. There's lots of benchmark info online if interested. Made in Thailand too.

My Samsung drive started to go, bought another Samsung off Amazon and that arrived with loads of bad sectors and is incredibly noisy so didn't want another samsung again.

Got very good reviews. It better work because although I've never used Pixmania before I'm well aware they're a bit crap and their customer support number is 10p plus your normal rate which is cheeky. Would have preferred to buy one off amazon but this model they don't sell in the UK and the 5400rpm model is out of stock.

You won't find this drive cheaper I looked everywhere. I also tracked £1.75 quidco cash back. Free delivery 2-4 days UPS. It's also listed on sites as a Hitachi travelstar as Hitachi HD business was bought by WD.

That's good news, hopefully WD hasn't sabotaged them too much as Hitachi drives were always the most reliable ones. I've searched everywhere for this drive but the only other respectable seller is Ebuyer and it was £65.

It's because it's relatively new. Scan have it for £57 too but it's oos - that's as long as you have free shipping with them through AvForum or Hexus.

I'm tempted, I was thinking putting the this in the PS4 when it is released then replacing the PS3 HDD with the one inside the PS4, or maybe I should just wait.

It's a shame MS have not opened up their own HDD tech so you can use multiple HDD's on it, and not just clone a select few. I prefer their system of allowing you to install the full game on the HDD over the PS3's partial installs

Usually it's to charge you £129.99 for a £28 drive e.g the Ms plastic tax. This time round though we are safe unless they have used a special [special] version of usb 3.

I'd sooner go the Scan route, even with the lack of cashback, but being oos...

Ah, sod it... I'll have a dabble!

Purchased! I upgraded my PS3 once before from an 80 to a 320 but with all of the free PS+ games out there i need more room! Heat added.

I update my 60gb to 640gb and that's got 40gb - 60gb left

Mine arrived this lunchtime. Ordered on monday. No warning of dispatch even on my account or via email. In a padded box loose in a large box which isn't good.

That's why I prefer Scan to Pixmania. Give it a check with HDSentinel or similar, smart, a self test and a surface test should catch any problems.

How are you setting the sata 6.Gb/s to sata 1 (150Mbps) mode ?

Sorry I have no idea what you're on about. I just plugged it in and did a system image restore. It's quite noisy I've emailed HGST to find out if it's my comp or the drive as the faulty drive I first bought from Amazon was also loud but it was faulty but my 640gb drive that has problems is virtually silent.

E.g when you get say m7 sammmy drive you need to set sata mode to SATA gen 1 [150Mbps] to stop the likes of iplayer stuttering.

Now fstool for Hitachi drives cannot alter this 7k1000 drive as it's not supported according to the version I'm using. As I bought the 7k for ps3 use assuming these had been fully tested on ps3

Ps how full was your 640Gb sammy drive ? and how long did it take to back it up

17+ hours to back mine upto 1tb western digital in usb 3 caddy (obviously using ps3 usb 2 though) the 640gb I have in ps3 has about 60gb free

With 3hours 41 minutes still to go @ 80%

Hi,
I had no problems, video played fine, for me it was literally plug in, I had a system image disk using Easeus todo, ran that. And that's where I hit a glitch. I'm still not understanding your question, sorry, mine was for my laptop not a game station.

Yes it takes ages to transfer stuff across, hours and hours, my 640gb was pretty much full, something to leave doing overnight.

It's incredibly loud in my laptop, do you find it loud?, and it started making a repeated clunking noise today so I've asked to return it. I get the crunching noise when it's accessing data ie every single time I open a web page and I can hear it in my hallway about 4-5m away also I hear clearly the whirrr click whiiirr click noise which is constant but the clunking noise is what convinced me it's faulty as it's only happened about 5 times that I've heard but each time there was about 5-15 clunks which is not normal.
To compare I was using a 640gb and now I'm currently using a 320gb I ripped from an portable and both are extremely quiet. However I bought a 1tb Samsung (same model as my 640gb just 1tb) drive from Amazon last week and I'm also returning that, but whilst that is also extremely loud vibrating it makes a whole variety of noises, it's definitely not happy, I've never heard anything like it. I'm just wondering whether it's worth the risk trying another 1tb drive or maybe settle for something a bit smaller. Both this drive and the one from Amazon have reviews noting how quiet they are so maybe I've just been unlucky.

I have raised the issue over the packing in my email to pixmania about returning it. How was yours packaged?

If anyone who bought one can feedback on noise I'd really appreciate it. Thanks

My packaging at Pixmaina was not too bad. I've had HDDs delivered in worse packaging.

I mistakenly thought you were the op and had yours in a PlayStation 3.

Got mine last week and been using it on my PS3. No issues so far, downloaded about 100GB worth of games on it and it seems fine. Loading and the overall PS3 interface seems a bit faster even though the PS3 has only a SATA1 interface, hoping to put this on the PS4 when it comes out which should have a SATA 3 or at least a SATA 2 interface and use the HDD to it's fullest, but quite happy with the small speed boost I got on the PS3 for now.

have you checked iplayer for stuttering

Basically 2 scenarios . Head parking causes stutter on WD BEVT drives and you have to disable HP otherwise iplayer stutters and the other e.g my sammy m7 640gb drive the stuttering was fixed by setting to SATA 1.5Gbps[GEN1] which instantly stopped this behavior.

Just used an app on my phone to measure decibels.
My 320gb Resting 24-27, going 34-37
7K1000 resting 35-38, going 41-49
Old samsung resting 28-31 going 35-40 and that's with the fans going heavily other two fans were on low, this faulty drive kicks them off.

According to the advertised specs the 7k1000 should be 1db louder not 10. No reply from Pixmania yet, hopefully the process is smooth.

Got mine today. Not bad going. Ordered Friday, received Monday on the free ship UPS.
Not installed yet but came packaged snug in a box a tad bigger than the drive with sponge inside. And that then was in an A4 size box. So, not bad really. I noted that the build date on the drive is May 13.
Will report back if particularly noisy.

Don't know why this deal is expired as they have been and are still available at this price.

If you're installing it in a laptop I'd love to know, as I'm wary of buying another. I've sent this one back. The noise difference is just too huge which suggests it's vibrating too much and there's a mechanical problem but is a very good drive at a great price.

Got an email from HGST this morning saying from what I've said it sounds like it has a mechanical failure.

That's a shame, thinking back on my old Hitachi drives they used to be a bit louder than others but not the extent you're describing, hopefully they'll replace it quickly. The one I bought I put in my PS3 but can't say it's any louder as the PS3 itself can be quite loud.

I haven't asked for a replacement. I wanted to make sure it was returned in 7 days so Pixmania couldn't refuse a refund and I didn't want to risk another one being like this. It's a fab spec drive which is shame and 3 year warranty is good too. I'm making do with my 320gb drive at the mo so not panicking.

Sorry for the delay in feedback. Just got around to installing this drive in my lappy. Can report it runs fine/noise free and is a vast improvement over the original 128Gb I had (the latter having now been installed in my 12Gb PS3 Super Slim).
