Mixed reviews but most would recommend to others. I know this will get shot down in flames by proper metal detectorists (is that a word?) but maybe a good starter kit?

Standard bumf below:

Curious types will be impressed with this sleek and superior high quality, high performance metal detector with LCD display and auto calibration system that does all the hard work for you! This water resistant detector can be used in all weather situations and can search 9 inches deep.

Link not working?
try this

*EDIT* Sorry neither link is working? Item 270/5877

*EDIT 2* Just checked in Firefox and the link is working. Doesn't work in Chrome. No Argos links are working for me in Chrome, anyone know why?

As usual the silent chillers at work, busy earning their judge badge, who clearly know of a better deal, yet cannot be ar$ed to tell us about it

we mite find sum gold

Hey good fine - I will be rich soon with this! Rich I tell yer!

Doesn't pick up certain metals according to some reviews, gold being one of them. Ok if you want to find a tin of beans?

Unfortunately you get what you pay for, decent detectors start at £600 my detector was £1250 unless its for children dont waste your £s

I've always fancied doing a bit of Metal Detecting but not sure this is gonna be up to much. The 'Gadget' in the title makes me think it will be more of a toy. But, I have no experience of these things so I'm open to have my mind changed...

As a totally serious question or two. Is your investment of £1250 going to pay for itself with "finds" and what sorts of things do you use it to look for? TIA as I'm just totally curious.

cibarious

I'm curious of the whole 'Metal Detecting' thing too cibarious but I assume 'paying for itself' isn't something that would need to be considered if it's a 'hobby/pastime'. If you enjoy something I suppose the cost is irrelevant (assuming you have the funds to feed your hobby).

Would buy the one above before taking a chance on the Argos one. Argos one has no arm grip, think it would get tiring using it over a prolonged period.

I would vote this cold if it was for an adult, simply because if you are interested in this as a hobby then this will surely put you off it. Saying that it may be useful on the beach but only on the dry sand. Basically with any detector you will find any decent size object 1-2 iches below sand. The difference of a good detector is that it will find small items of jewellery and small coins easily down to 6-8 inches.

If it was for a kid, then take them to a beach, throw some copper coins in the sand and let them go play, then tell them any £1 get returned to you. Make the wee sods work for you.

A good starter detector for anyone seriously interested would be Garrett Ace 150.
