I barely drink but I take Milk Thistle daily.

To the OP, do you know what strength Silymarin these are? It's very odd that they don't tell you on the site. They usually do as here - lambertshealthcare.co.uk/mil…53/

Th important thing is the amount of Silymarin extracted from the seed. I buy these ones, as they are 240g silymarin per tablet, and the best price I could find. I will buy this one you've posted if it's the same strength though, so would love to know!
milk thistle interacts with many prescriptions medicines so be careful... e.g it can reduce the effect of oral contraceptives and increase the risk of bleeds when taking ibuprofen
Milk thistle is great for liver detoxing.
Take 1 the day before,
another the morning of the day you're gonna drink
and another the night you are drinking.
I've done this for years and never had a hangover!

I take it on a daily basis ,do enjoy a glass of wine lol !! Think its 200mg of silymarin (natures best do 8580 ones) ,will order a pot and have a look at the label and get back .On 2nd thoughts will give it a miss ,they have an ebay site and have had terrible negative feedback lately !!!!

Does it work?
summaries.cochrane.org/CD0…ses
Seems like the body has a very hard time absorbing it without major chemical/structural modification
Just arrived today and it's 216mg of silymarin, so excellent value.

Works out at 6.5g of silymarin per £
versus 3.9g of silymarin per £ for the ones in the link provided by therealslimkaty

(i did the math :))

Thanks. I had looked at the Nature's Best 8580 ones before, they are 200mg Silymarin and are 9.95 for 90, so double the price of the ones I've been buying, and even more than the ones posted on here. I think I'll risk trying the ones posted on here.

Thank you for posting and for calculating it! Although the ones I've been taking are 240mg, so a bit stronger, the price difference means that I'm happy to try the ones on here. Will be ordering some now.

Yes, it works. I take Milk Thistle and beetroot juice for my liver, due to problems caused by me being on Methotrexate drug therapy for rheumatoid arthritis and I have noticed definite improvement in the past two months. When you find a drug has been taken for thousands of years, it generally works.

Just because doctors and scientists say they don't have evidence, doesn't mean it's not true. I've had a consultant tell me that doing an anti-inflammatory diet won't help RA symptoms, but I know that it does, having followed one. The same consultant has never carried out any such research.

Lol, am I looking at the wrong page? On the one you linked to it says:
Cirrhosis: Although these results are promising, most studies have been poorly designed. Better research is necessary before a strong recommendation can be made
Liver disease (chronic): Most studies have been small and poorly designed. More research is needed before a strong recommendation can be made.
And those are the best 2 (grade B evidence)!
Do you understand what its saying?!

p.s. I'm not knocking the product, if it works for you then great. I'm just bemused that you point me to a website that is quite scathing about the clinical evidence

Maybe not conclusive evidence but promising and hardly scathing...

Multiple studies from Europe suggest benefits of oral milk thistle for cirrhosis. In experiments up to five years long, milk thistle has improved liver function and decreased the number of deaths that occur in cirrhotic patients.

Several studies of oral milk thistle for hepatitis caused by viruses or alcohol report improvements in liver tests.

There are early reports from laboratory experiments that the chemicals silymarin and silibinin in milk thistle reduce the growth of human breast, cervical, and prostate cancer cells.

A small number of studies suggest possible improvements of blood sugar control in cirrhotic patients with diabetes.

An herbal preparation containing milk thistle may be effective in decreasing symptoms of functional dyspepsia.

Several studies suggest possible benefits of milk thistle to treat or prevent liver damage caused by drugs or toxic chemicals.

Lol popoyaya, talk about selective reading! Do you only read the bits that agree with your opinion. I'll fill in the gaps that you left out for illumination:

An herbal preparation containing milk thistle may be effective in decreasing symptoms of functional dyspepsia. However, milk thistle alone has not been researched.

Several studies suggest possible benefits of milk thistle to treat or prevent liver damage caused by drugs or toxic chemicals. Results of this research are not clear, and most studies have been poorly designed. Therefore, there is not enough scientific evidence to recommend milk thistle for this use.

I wont mention the cancer one as its beneath contempt. You need to read evidence objectively.

A year ago i was told that my liver whatsits were a bit high due to my consumption of alcohol and being prescribed statins .I was advised to cut down on my consumption .Tried for a couple of weeks but was soon back to the same old level of 2 large glasses of wine a night .I was also told as i got older it would only get worse .
I started to take Milk Thistle 240mg silymarin on a daily basis along with 'Liv 52' .Just got back from the docs this morning for the result of my annual blood test and my liver whatsits are now normal . All i can say is Milk thistle has definatley worked for me !!!!!

Sounds good Mac.Maybe someone will conduct a good study on this one day and build up a case so strong that this will be made available free on the NHS as part of standard care for liver cirrhosis.
Maybe you can up the intake to 3 large glasses a night :-)

As I said current research is inconclusive but looks promising. And with 1000's of years of use it appears safe to experiment with. I for one have been conducting a little study of my own with a sample size of one, me, and it certainly seems to make a big difference in reducing hangover symptoms after a night out and consumption of 6 or 7 beers. Some of us are early adopters in life and are prepared to try out the efficacy of things that have, as yet, no firm scientific proof. When it's as safe and cheap as Milk Thistle the potential benefits massively outweigh any negative, IMHO.
