At the south end of the strip,ok nothing special. The Tropicana is now one of the oldest hotels in LV. Stratosphere is more fun and always has good deals as does the Quad [ old Imperial Palace ] which is great for location half way along the strip.
Tropicana is a far better hotel, and location than the Strat.
Monorail connecting Monte Carlo to Bellagio means most of the strip is accessible from the Trop without to much walking.
You can't walk anywhere from the Stratosphere Hotel, now that the Sahara has shut. You need the SDX buses.Trop also been refurbed.
Strat is well out of the way and the area around doesn't look the safest. I stayed at MGM which is next to Tropicano and the location was fine, monorail or walk to all areas
I stayed at the Tropicana a few years ago - had recently been renovated.

Mid range rooms (i.e. Miles better than the cheap places but not luxury)

Great location.

Casino is small but you won't spend much time there. Just go to one of the better ones and use this as base.

The pool area is very good.

I had an excellent stay.

Stratosphere is a pain as you basically have to cab everywhere
Was a bit run down when I went to Vegas a few years ago but at this price not even the haters on here can complain (although they probably will)
Let's hope that they're better run than the UK arm of Doubletree because in the UK they're nothing better than an overpriced Travel Lodge with uncaring staff

Nice casino - recently refurbed throughout as well

Don't forget the Resort Fee though!!!

(...though this may help if you want it scrapping: tripadvisor.co.uk/Sho…tml )

edit: to clarify on the resort fee... it's currently $19.99 plus 12% tax (and the room rate should also be plus 12% tax) - this makes a one night stay = $75.25 in total --- makes this less of a deal in my opinion unless you can get the resort fee scrapped

We went for Christmas one year and the town is kinda dead. Lots of shows closed. Lots of Chinese families because they don't necessarily celebrate Christmas as a big thing -and they like a wee flutter. The town really comes to life for new year when the real money descends. A completely different vibe for new year.
Hotel is real nice.
I stayed here (Tropicana) June 2011 (after the revamp/refurb, and before Hilton Dtree bought it). Nice, clean, new and tidy in the rooms, casino floor well presented too, gone is the smokey smell...
Popped back in for a gamble back in May, still nice and clean, so assume rooms are still nice....
Great spot on the strip, as its on the '4 Corner', ie: MGM, NYNY and Excal. and given its South strip, always good for a walk......

I would recommend staying here, amongst many other places!
Strat as someone mentioned is beyond the north of the strip, cheapo costs, and has a ghetto strip of walk, between that hotel and the glitz strip (say starting from TI / Encore, etc)
