Very low price probably because this is a 12.5mm drive so wont fit many laptops so check compatibility before buying. Probably wont fit a PS3 either.

Product specs at Hitachi.

It’s very cheap because of the size I suspect; I don’t know how many laptops can take a 12.5mm drive?
Handy for a SFF low power desktop maybe!

Looks like it would make a reasonably priced external drive if combined with a suitable encloure. On Scan there is one that takes both IDE and SATA drives at £13.56

or one just for SATA at £11.52

Makes the external drive £44.71...but maybe will need a couple of cables as it sayd 'enclosure only'.

I am assuming it will fit in a 12.5mm drive too as it says "Supports any 2.5" IDE/SATA notebook HDD"...at least on the first one.

Anyone got a better buy for enclosures to fit this? Ebay have one which is £20ish but says it can transfer 3Gb/s via eSATA as opposed to those above which are 1.5Gb/s. However, I don't have eSATA.

EDIT : second thoughts now. The more expensive P2NMAX specifically says it takes 12.5mm drives so I am not sure the ones above do.

Confirmed - the first 2 don't

Buy the caddy now, while it's instock and you can actually get one !

Even you don't buy a Hard Drive now, it'll stop you being stuffed in the future when the caddies are unobtainable...

managed to shoehorn 12.5 mm height 400Gb Hitachi into my mac mini after trimming off the plastic on the inside , still working well ..:-D

if the fittings are anything like on the Dell Vostro 1700, you'd be out of luck. I just went to fit my new drive to my 1700 and at first glance, I thought it was going to work - it did fit the bay, but unfortunately the adaptor that converts the standard SATA plug on the drive to the slot in Dell connector is raised by the extra height of the drive and so can't slide down far enough to make good contact - hence it doesn't actually work.

maybe the 1735 has a different method of mounting drives, but if it has an adaptor as described above, I wouldn't hold out much hope on it working.

Expired although back on Today Only for £58.64. :w00t:

curses, laptop HDD drive died yesterday, saw this on Today Only and bought one - then noticed this thread and realised that it will be too big. I either send it back or try to ebay it. Teach me to read specs more even if I think something is a bargain....

They're very light so it will be cheap to send it back so you won't lose much if you had free postage.

Got mine today, apparently they'll fit in the new unibody MacBook Pros, so going to try on my GFs 13" one.
