sorted byNot saying it can't be moved around but you'll get tired after a while having to lunge around that extra power brick everywhere with USB cable + this HD is actually heavier as internally it has a Hitachi 3.5" 72000rpm drive. Check my previous comment #14 on what drive is inside. And there is no such thing as a 3TB drive in 2.5" format as the largest 2.5" drive is 1TB to date. Look it up. Google is your friend.
Everyone within the IT crowd tends to associate "Portable" HD with 2.5" drives since it's very light + have no need for a 3-pin power brick to carry around but only the data/power USB cable. That's only two items to carry around whereas the desktop model comes with three items that you have to carry.
Comet sells allsorts but wouldn't come to any surprise that their staff may not know the big difference between "Portable" or "Desktop" in IT arena as words like this can be quite generic in terms. Example link below. Notice the word "Desktop" for the same brand, series but less capacity.
HITACHI XL-2TB DESKTOP 2TB BLACK DESKTOP HARD DRIVE £89.99 (edited)
I think you misunderstand the word portable when talking about hard drives (_;)
Our opinions are not relevant, nor is the dictionary definition.
What matters is Comet's usage of the terminology.
Ergo....
p.s.
Hot hot deal if you can find stock.

The drives I took out we're Hitachi 7K3000 drives at 7200rpm. Checked there serial numbers on the Hitachi website and hey presto, they have a manufacturer warranty, so I didn't invalidate the warranty by taking the drives out the cases!!! Then plugged my old 2TB drives in the cases for backup purposes!

Of course it's portable, how would you expect to get it home if it wasn't?
Portable when talking external harddrives refers to 2.5" disks in an enclosure that only require a single cable to both power and transfer data. Anything with "Desktop" in the name refers to larger 3.5" desktop harddrives in an enclosure that require an additional power supply, and therefore less portable.
One thing that hasn't been addresses in previous comments is that this is only USB2. Having just done a large backup on a 1TB USB2 drive it took over 5 hours to transfer 300GB of data. If you plan to fill this 3TB drive you will want to set it going in the morning, and check the progress in the evening. For drives this size, paying a little extra to get USB3 will save you a lot of time in the long run.
Because it is if goods are faulty - however outside of Distance Selling Regulations there is no requirement whatsoever for any shop to offer a refund unless the item is not of satisfactory quality or fit for purpose.
The shop does not have to allow returns purely because you have changed your mind.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
This hard drive may need a power adapter - but it's still portable isn't it?
No mate - this is a 3.5" external desktop drive. Portable is 2.5" or smaller and draws power from the source.
Yes it is. It isn't fixed down
Portable is not an official description for denoting the power source of an external drive and is pretty meaningless. Better to spell out on HUKD whether an external drive is bus powered or requires an external power adapter.
It's portable - look the word up. Just not as portable as a 2.5" drive

Has anyone besides the OP, and shifty84 found one?

Scorching hot if it is nationwide though.

Paid same price for 1TB yesterday.
Maybe there should be a separate section for Tesco/Comet "instore only" deals...
Would you mind sharing what drives were inside? Just wanted to know what speed, cache etc they were.
