This Hive unit is discontinued as the new model is out, however personally I think this is actually better than the new model. You can see the temperature on thermostat just by glancing at it, the new version has leds behind a mirrored finish which makes it look more like a dimmer switch than a thermostat. If you wanted the new version it would actually be cheaper to buy this and upgrade (just £99) than to buy the new one anyway!

Recently was on Amazon Lightning Deal at £134.99 (6th August), but this is obviously cheaper.

Hive connects to most Gas boilers and allows wireless control, either from the wireless thermostat - that can be moved from room to room as needed. You can also control the temperature over the internet or via the apps on Apple / Android. On you way home you can turn the heating on, or just setup a weekly schedule to turn on and off during the day, differently on each day etc.

You can also use the geofence feature where it can notify you if you leave your home and the heating is still on!

Quite often free when you fix your energy tariff for 2/3 years. I have recently got Cosy through First Utility supplied and installed for free.

Why is it better than the new version OP?

According the to the telegraph it cost you £197 which makes the hive a better deal

Great price considering it includes installation and since Nest doesn't do your hot water.

Heat added, no pun intended

I've got an oil boiler so need to pay for someone else to install. any idea how much this would cost, it it something I could do myself?

If I buy now , how long do I have to get it installed ? May be moving in a few months time so might buy now for use in new house

Good price but once again and typical of Argos 'out of stock' in my area!! Standard for Argos it seems

This is brilliant, for the short time I've used it, it does give the ease of turing on your heating when you're away from home. You can have a schedule for each day, to turn it on/off as and when your want to or to have it on for a quick one off of 30min/1hr/2hr. All you purchase is a box with a voucher, to which you activate by telephone to schedule a BG engineer to come and instal it with all the equipment.

Bought this on the amazon lightning deal and dead impressed. We are in a 300 year old house so installation was tricky - they did it without any worries and the app/system is brilliant. Highly recommended if you have a timer and thermostat that are old and need replacing any time soon.

Great deal, they've just done a major update to hive to add more features which is also available for those on 'Hive 1' through the app. The only thing that's different between the two is the re-designed thermostat, functionality is exactly the same. As our stat only gets touched when it's getting dusted I'm certainly not going to pay for the upgraded one.

That's what I would like to know as won't be moving until new build is completed next Spring. Is it a 1 year install voucher?

another dumb question. how many phones can be connected to a single hive unit? my wife and I would ideally like to control the unit.

Really struggling to see the point in this if your normal home thermostat lets you program exact temp & when to come on.
So this thing lets you do the same from your phone? - is that really such a timesaver as you only usually need to program the thermostat once - well haven't changed the settings on ours for a couple of years anyway

Snap, in the same boat. Called BG and they told me I needed to arrange my own install. Would love to know how much it costs if anyone with an oil boiler has had it done. Thanks.

Easy to install yourself if you already have some sort of programmer or timeswitch. There is documentation on the website which tells you how.

Thanks - will take a look!

Good deal but I'm not sure I'd save much though. I have a decent 7 day timer and my combined gas and electricity monthly payments are only £51 with First Utility for a well insulated 3 bed house. That and the fact that there is no app for Windows Phone yet

We have 3 phones and 2 iPads connected. I doubt there is a limit

If you have a pretty regular schedule and very rarely adjust the timing/temperature then no there isn't much point.

When I was looking for one they were 199 BG was offering to fit for 199 so I let them do it. There was only 4 wires to connect to the boiler
Well pleased with mine

I think its more of a money saver than a time saver. We have a pretty constant routine, but I know for a fact that there have been many occasions where we have got in late or gone out for the night and the boiler has been chugging away heating an empty house for hours. The benefit this gives is that you can turn it off remotely if you left it on and then get it to heat the house ready for your return

If you have a BG maintenance contract and you arrange a call out to repair your faulty timer, they will offer Hive at half price

Is it something I need or another gadget to play with and show friends? only advantage I see is adhoc turning on/off while out, rest of programming can be done using standard timer. I have lived the past 40 yrs without it, so guess it's just another gadget taking over control. thanks anyway OP

Yes, very poor. Says in stock on product page but OOS when you try to check out.

where should the thermo be located? our old one is in the hall, nr from door and stairs - often the coldest place but acceptable

Horses for courses - 100s of thousands of users in UK of these and similar devices are saving money and improving their energy usage and home comfort. Its a matter of personal choice but if you take your logic further then why bother with a thermostat and programmer at all - Why not just control it all manually, but that wouldn't be convenient would it....ah yes convenience and extra savings maybe they are onto something.....

They attach one part to your boiler, then another 'hub' onto your router/internet box. Finally a wireless thermostat somewhere in the house. All wireless, so no need to lift carpets. I have noticed a difference to my bills, not huge though. I work shifts which change at the last minute, so useful for turning on/off when needed.

One of the biggest advantages I've found is being able to change the temperature, turning the heating on and off, without having to go to the thermostat to do it. Handy during the night in the winter. I know you can get wireless thermostats butbthen the thermostat would be with you. I regularly change the temperature during the night depending on my kids bedrooms.

They will not install this on oil boilers. British Gas is not set up to fix them IF something should go wrong during installation
