Has anyone done the install themselves

my uncle dave had a go last week, think he got it almost done but for an issue with the electric supply, funeral's on Thursday (no flowers).

If you're a British Gas customer I think this is a better deal:

Save a lot of faffing around, all for an extra tenner.

Got one already. Great piece of kit. Was cheaper at Amazon at xmas

I had in installed last year. It looked simple enough, simple removal of the existing thermostat and replacing the control setting, but i'd say unless you were adept at these kind of things the above offer would be superior.

Argos are offering £10 voucher with £100 spend from today

Great price.

Bought one for £140 from Amazon Warehouse and self installed a couple of weeks ago. Pretty straightforward if you have wired a lightswitch before and a bit of Googling.

I couldn't stop laughing at this comment. So funny. X)

There's a jpg pic doing the rounds, of a headstone, carved 'Wonderful Husband, Great Father, Hopeless Electrician'. So be careful if you are D.I.Y'ing - I'm sure the regulations would call for a 'competent person' and unless you could prove that ...

Normally, i get home, and turn up the thermostat to turn on my heating. If i buy this, i can turn it on an hour before i get home, and warm the house before i get in, BUT, its using an extra hour of gas, so it costs me more! I don't think its about energy efficiency, more about profits for the gas companies (_;)

Yes, it's pretty easy. Reasonable instructions are provided in the box and additional help is available on-line. If you have a standard heating controller and thermostat, its no more complicated than swapping the boxes - you will have to short the connection if you're replacing a wired thermostat.

Not really...technically you could use the same amount, as the house will be warm when you get home, so you can turn it off an hour earlier?

Competency is subjective, innit.

look up the Dunning Kruger effect.

Is it just me that considers these "smart" devices to be a tad over priced & likely to fall in price shortly ?

Competition in this segment should increase.

If you're happy with the system you have, this probably isn't for you. I have a thermostat that I set times and temperatures on, but sometimes I'm held up at work so it's running for hours without me there, or I go out and forget to turn it off/down. A Hive or similar would solve that problem.

£140 seems entirely reasonable for the kit, considering a relatively basic digital thermostat itself is about £50-60.

Cheaper @Argos overall. £143 with a free £10 gift card for a spend over £100.

Biggest problem with Argos is that they sell used items as new. The one I picked up today from Argos was sellotaped up. I got them to write the condition of the box on the receipt, chances are that if you have to return it, they will blame you for putting on the sellotape...

This practice of re-boxing used items and selling them as new is incredibly shady, I've had previously re-sealed items from Argos with missing parts. Trading standards need to step in and do something. Any re-sealed item should either be discounted or sent to a clearance store.

I went for the nest instead of this after comparing them. I paid £169 with stand and £40 to get it fitted. My gas bill has just dropped £12 a month 3 months later so it will pay for I a self in a bit more than a year. My last cheap thermostat always had a delay 30 seconds this is instant and much more efficient at controlling the temperature . Tuning off as soon as it's tracked your phone when you leave the house. Good bit of kit, not sure about hive but these types in general will save you money and it pays for itself. Plus it looks class
