Hive Active Heating with install for £150 through subscription cancellation @ British gas

Found 9th Dec 2017
I'm aware that this has been posted before, but I want to reiterate that this deal is on par with the recent Black Friday deals for Hive inc. installation.

However, it's always available and very easy to do!

British Gas' Hive terms and conditions state that you will pay a flat fee of £150 should you choose to cancel your British Gas Hive subscription 14 days after installation and within the first year. Your access to remote functionality will remain.

You simply need to subscribe to Hive through British Gas and agree to the monthly fee (£9 or £10), which you subsequently will never pay. To ensure that your first direct debit payment doesn't come out pre-cancellation, you must ensure that your direct debit date is set to go out after the date you plan to cancel. Simple.

My install date: 24th Nov
My direct debit date: 22nd
My cancel date: 9th Dec (fee paid too!)

This is tried and tested, and I repeat... matches the recent Black Friday deals all year round!

For reference, the current Hive subscription fees are as follows:

British Gas customers pay £9 a month over 24 months (£216)
Non-British Gas customers pay £10 a month over 24 months (£240)

Happy Hiving!

It's brilliant and puts the Black Friday 'deals' to shame.
This is only available for British gas customers isn't it?

No , read the bit about non British Gas customers pay £10
if i understand the terms and condition correctly £10 for 12 months and no charge if you cancel after 12 months so it works out to be £120.
How long do you have to wait for installation?

Is the £10 a month to pay for it but when you cancel you then pay the £150?

No, £70 if you cancel after 12 months. So £120 + £70.
Is this all organised online? How do you pick a direct debit date?

Nope, not correct. £9 or £10 a month for 24 months. If you cancel in the first 12 months, you pay £150 termination fee plus any monthly subscription fees you've already paid (which is why it's best to cancel before the first monthly payment is due to debit).

If you cancel after the first 12 months but before the 24 month ends, you pay £70 termination fee plus any monthly subscription fees you've already paid.

I did mine over the phone, although there is an option to subscribe online and book an installation date. If there's no option to pick a direct debit payment date online, they can definitely change it over the phone. I did this :-)

I managed to get my Hive installed within a matter of days. It just depends on when a BG engineer is available in your area.

Yes, exactly. But if you cancel bang on the 14 days after installation, and your direct debit is set to come out after that 14 days, you will only pay the £150 and the direct debit will never be taken.

Thank you! Been looking at one of these or a Nest. But can never make my mind up and I do prefer the look of the nest thermostat. The turning it on when out or by your phone in the lounge is def a plus point. Plus works with Alexa too. I assume this is the latest version.

Yes, you'll always get the latest version from BG. I think the bonus of the Hive is that it runs on batteries and therefore doesn't need to be wired in. It can be mounted, or there's a stand available if you'd prefer it to be portable. The nest is wired.

Does this include the hub? Which is needed for using other hive devices remotely, like the plugs? I'm guessing the hub isn't needed to use just the thermostat via the mobile app? Cheers

Yes, the thermostat installation includes the hub. The hub is needed for all Hive devices as this is what plugs into your router to enable remote access. :-)
does the hub need to be fixed into the wall or can it just sit on a desktop?
( i'm thinking of changing room layout soon so router might move into another room )

The hub plugs into your router. I'm guessing you mean the thermostat which can be portable or mounted. It just runs off batteries so you can do what you like with it :-)
The cancelation after 14 days reads differently when I looked ....If your plan is cancelled after 14 days of receiving your Hive Active Heating kit but within 12 months.... What do i need to pay?.... The remaining balance of the payment plan for your Hive Active Heating kit

A bargain at £150, you'll probably save that on your blls over 3 or 4 years so effectively free !
Is it worth paying a bit more for a nest ?
nest or hive?
Had Hive since February, I'm delighted with it
After a weekend of trying to get the hub to speak with the receiver and the thermostat, mine is going back to amazon. The electrics were easy but the set up a nightmare. Googling it seems to show lots of connection issues, and as it was going in the in-laws house it just didn't seem dependable.

I have voted hot as £150 currently would be a good self install price, and even better installed.
So just buying this and installing this isn't enough? You need to pay monthly for it to function?
I don't pay anything

I paid Amazon about £170 who promised me a full refund if the engineer couldn't install it.

He did, but it took him over an hour as I have a very old (back boiler/water tank) system so paying extra for the install was good value in my case

The monthly fee is for the Hive device (hub, thermostat and receiver) and its installation. All that's lost upon cancellation is your subscription to Hive Live (I can't really explain what this is...) and access to discounts on Hive products.

By paying the £150 for terminating, you're effectively paying for just the device and installation and nothing else. You also get to keep your remote access.

The difference is that you pay a lot less by taking advantage of the BG Hive small print.
I got this from Hive including installation direct for £161 during Black Friday week.

Just to counter some of the negative comments in this thread about it. My experience so far has been excellent. It was installed within 2 days by British Gas. It took about 5 mins to set up with the hive app. And it has worked perfectly since - controlling your heating system from your phone is brilliant, and if you're an Alexa geek like me it works seamlessly with that.
So without this subscription as well, the hive works? I don't understand what's the subscription is for then.
How long would the remote functionality last? Is it 24 months ?

The remote functionality is permanent if you cancel two weeks after installation. Cancel before the two weeks and your Hive becomes a normal thermostat. The terms and conditions explain it here...

It's more to spread the cost, as far as I'm aware. With the subscription, you get discounts on other Hive products, but those discounts aren't big enough to warrant the extra £100 you pay over the course of the 24 months! It's scandalous.
Very smart OP
THANKS
Hive Live.
At the moment this is pretty worthless, it currently gives you random lights (if you have smart bulbs) to make it look like you hare home while on holiday and you get a discount off products and that's it.

Hive live however is the way they plan to add new functionality, as they introduce new features (like random lights) they will make it subscription only, they want to get an ongoing payment from users and the only way they can do that is make Hive Live appealing and encourage people to subscribe. What they really need is to invent a very appealing feature they can make subscription only, something people feel they cant live without, then its £££££££ for them.

What they can't do is move any of the current functionality onto Hive Live as early adopters bought it without subscription.

Hmmmm, so how would this work if I needed dual zone heating?
We did this offer a couple of months ago.

Install went fine, Cancellation went fine (waited 15 days)

Final bill came through including cancellation fee of £00.00

Total paid £9.99.

Time will tell if the actually realise their mistake. If not, then it was well worth £9.99

So we don't pay anything upfront. And keep paying monthly subscription. To cover the cost of 150 over the period.
If u cancel in 15days, then you pay nothing at all? And keep having the features? That's strange. How do they allow that.
I have both electricity and gas with BG now. I wonder they would get the money back somehow from people who are subscribed to them.
