Thought this was a good deal WITH installation....

Can get it cheaper if you go with the British Gas deal that was posted, but you have to be an existing BG customer.

Curious why people are voting cold, it is £199 with John Lewis WITHOUT install

Standard price at the moment - same in Currys and John Lewis and 76p cheaper at Amazon (199.20)
You can get the unit without installation for £139.99 at currys currently (Hive Only)
Or with a bit of faff including installation for £150 direct from BG: (Hive With Install)

Ah, thanks for the reply, didn't realise John Lewis included installation

I mentioned the BG deal in my original post by the way.... You need to be a customer

same at Argos and £10 voucher

Maplin with a £15 voucher?

...and how long will it take to recover the cost of this gizmo with the smaller gas bills?

Just curious as I've seen umpteen of these deals and can see no financial benefit in the short or medium term and, as technology has proven so many times before, by the time medium term is here there will have been several new and improved gizmos and you go round the loop again.

I am not interested in the financial benefit, I just want the convenience

OK, I'll bite - what convenience?

The £15 is off a £100 spend so virtually worthless.

We were only charged £149 with installation by British Gas, just a service contract and no utilities supply.

Being able to switch my heating on or off when not in the house, setting the temp while sitting in the living room watching TV. Might not sound like something you are interested in, but I like that convenience.

Fair enough and thanks for taking the time to reply.

You're right about me, I cannot see that as value for money or even a great convenience. I'll wait until they mind read before I indulge.

Can also be linked to voice recognition devices like Echo, so basically say you want the heating on and it will turn on It's the way things are going, and I like it

Some people are happy not progressing with tech, but I want to be able to do this:

Hi, as we have already agreed, we are all different (and boring it would be if we weren't )

I am all for useful technology of all forms but, to me, this is technology for technology's sake and would add nothing to my life, even if it were free.

I don't agree with "this is technology for technology's sake", this is ideal if someone is disabled, and cannot currently control any of these things from their chair, now they have the independence to do so.

Also, what if you happen to forget to turn your heating off and you are already 1 hour down the road on your way to a 2 week holiday? Those are only 2 examples. Its all pretty useful, not just a gimmick

Even if it was just " technology for technology's sake", then I would rather that than remain in a boring world where we only invent things for a boring purpose.

Oh, I totally agree with your disabled example and there are, of course, exceptions but I was talking about myself.

Your holiday example does not apply to me either because I have great neighbours.

Personally, I am very grateful to the early adopters and, like you, I wouldn't want only boring things to be invented. After all, at some time, I might be far less able than I am now and so would be very grateful to the early adopters who have test-bedded the technology so that it can be made cheaply for the masses.

As I believe I suggested when we entered this dialogue, for myself this is neither VFM nor is it offering me any benefits. oO

Thank you for taking the time to respond, it's appreciated. (we need more emoticons on here as I wanted a thumbs up to end)

What if your neighbors are on holiday too??? Hehehe!!

The only scary thing about it all, is the more smart we make our home, the more vulnerable we are to people hacking it all can imagine someone hacing into my heating and making my flat like a sauna just for a laugh X)
