I got this kit for free through the British Gas rewards program.

But I cannot get the hub synced up. I don't have any other hive products at all so should this work on its own?

Yes. Did you plug the hub into the internet router and leave for 30 minutes without turning it off?

Mine didn't work either (I don't think I let it do the initial setup properly) so I phoned them for help. The problem couldn't be fixed so they sent me a new hub which they helped me set up yesterday. Works a treat now!

I only have this basic kit from British Gas and it worked perfectly. I can see how it can be confusing at first glance, especially as you are diverted to the Hive website to set it up, but just follow it through and it will work. Hopefully you haven’t got a duff hub though
Hubs go for £20-30 on eBay as long as it’s new and unused (once they are registered to an email address they are locked I think). So price good to buy the kit, sell on the hub and get two light bulbs for 24.99.

Not initially but it has been plugged in with light in (which blinked as expected when turned on) but hub orange light never appears

Maybe you have bricked it by turning it off when it was doing the firmware update? Do as the other HUKD member did and contact Hive support.
Thanks!

I had this with the one I got free with the rewards offer, I rang them and they sent a whole new kit complete with more light bulbs

Might try that, particularly as I stupidly picked screw bulbs not remembering they were too big for the light fittings I wanted to use them for
