Trusted installation by British Gas
Our friends at British Gas have one of the largest networks of EV charger installers in the country. Their expert engineer will get everything set up safely for you and answer any questions.

Take control. Save money.
Hive EV Charging cleverly syncs with your energy tariff via the easy-to-use Hive app. So just plug your car in and it'll automatically charge up when your electricity's at its cheapest. And if you switch to the new Electric Driver tariff from our friends at British Gas – you could save even more.

Your installation in 3 easy steps

1. Quick Questionnaire: Tell us a bit about your home and EV.
2. Virtual Home Check: Discuss your installation requirements on a video call with one of our expert engineers.
3. Installation: We’ll have you up and charging in the Hive app within 3-5 hours. We aim to install within approximately 4 weeks of your order.

Input from 3rd parties and/or additional work may be required for complex installations (see FAQs below). Don’t worry we’ll take care of everything.

Smart. Simple. Effective.
The Hive app gives you accurate updates in real time – like when your car's plugged in and charging up. And as well as syncing with your energy tariff to charge when it's cheapest, it'll show you exactly how much you're spending in pounds and pence too.

The Alfen Eve Single S-line charger
With Hive EV Charging, you'll get a 7.4kW Alfen Eve Single S-line charger with a British Gas backed warranty. On average, it'll take just under eight hours to fully charge your car from empty (depending on the size of its battery).

I still don't get why these are so expensive, they are just a high power plug socket with a cable and a few bits of circuitry.
These should be like £100-£200 when you look at the price of similar electrical appliances. When you can get a 9kW electric shower for example for less than £100, is it really more expensive to produce one of these things?

They used to be far cheaper than they are now. Legislation made the units and their installation more complicated. Together with the removal of the grant, it meant the direct cost to consumers shot up!

The charger at my previous address was free. IIRC the standard cost (after the grant) was £199, and Renault covered this cost as part of the car purchase. That was in 2015. To go from that to ~£1,000 is just nuts.

Why would you need these? My car came with a 3pin domestic plug charger. I had a spark put a an isolated socket in the garage for £150 and can charge from there. I don’t use it as I get free charging just now, but was wondering for the future.

It will charge the car a lot faster 2.5kw Vs 9kw
The granny charger that came with your car is not designed for constant use it's designed for getting you out of a hole. It's also not as safe electrically speaking should a fault like a loss of earth develop.

    Telegraph quote of the AA
"New peak pricing at electric car chargepoints can leave consumers worse off than if they stuck to traditional petrol-engined vehicles, according to new analysis from the AA...."

Electric cars appear to be similar to heat pumps, the hype says they work out cheaper, but the reality is different.

479 quid for what is effectively a cable.
And then 500 quid to connect this cable to the consumer unit.
These electric cars almost sell themselves dont they.

I've not really had problems with their thermostat, but I know they pulled the plug on support for other accessories, such as security cameras, which have now been pretty much bricked, as they started they wanted to concentrate on their core products. So, I'd be concerned they might drop support for this.

They charged 189 per camera too for those indoor cameras at release and they turned out to be not very smart (edited)

Without a grant, it's hardly worth it for these anymore and with the charges for fitting, do people need a 7kw charger at home?

I've moved house and put a regular 2.3kW 3 pin charger (outdoor weatherproof plug, killswitch inside) that cost little over £100, and if it broke, it'd cost very little to fit a new one in.

It does mean my car charges in 12 hours rather than 5, but I can't say I've missed the 7kw charger since moving. Even out and about, I just stick to 50kw or more as 7kw just isn't worth it. (edited)

Found this in research for a friend who wanted a charger. Beware- connectivity is via a wired Ethernet cable or a SIM card with data facility (not supplied). In the end he got the pod point tethered installed for £999 direct with them.
