'Hokey Cokey' - £5 Goodybag Deal is Now Permanent @ Giff Gaff

This can be a VERY good deal if people ring you a lot.

You get 60 minutes and 300 texts (no contract, no direct debit, etc), but you also get an extra minute added for any complete minute you are called from any phone other than another giffgaff phone.

Usually by the end of the first week I'm up to 200 mins and by the end of the month I've never had less than 300 mins to spare. Pretty good for £5 with no contract or direct debit required I reckon.

All those irritating calls you get somehow become less irritating when you know that someone else's waffling is providing you with free minutes....trust me!

Internet is charged at 20p per day if you use it (I don't so this deal is perfect for me).

This deal has been posted before but giffgaff were always saying it was time-limited. However since they've now made it permanent I think it warrants a re-post.

Some notes......if you have or know anyone who has a Post Office home phoneline you can ring yourself for free all weekend and have as many free minutes on your mobile as you please. Also, giffgaff are currently the only mobile provider that allows calls to 0800 freephone numbers for free. Using saynoto0870 often uncovers an 0800 alternative for lots of big companies and can save you a lot. Also, you can top-up using O2 vochers so no complications on that front.

OK.....let the flaming commence!!

To Clarify:

On this £5 goodybag you get charged 20p per day (up to 50mb) then 20p per mb.

On the £10 (and above) Goodybag you get unlimited free internet included.

If you get referred by a current member you get £5 extra credit on activating. No referalls allowed on here, but if you ask a member on here who you think is ok giffgaff, I am sure they will give you their link! Failing that, the community at giffgaff.com is very good and tonnes of people to refer.

The way goodybags work is that you BUY them using your credit. You do not just get the benefits for topping up (as someone mentioned above).

Any questions just ask and I will try to answer!

It is 20p per day for up to 20Mb not 50....

Yes m8 the £10 goodybag has free unlimited internet
The OP mentioned 300mins spare at the end of the month, surely the goodybag only lasts a month and them minutes would be lost, or am i reading it wrong.

Could somebody explain it to me? I'm checking the £10 goodybad tariff

Yes, you have to put a new goodybag at the end of each month to stay on the deal. Any spare minutes built up from the previous month will not rollover or anything but that's standard practice these days with mobile companies.

You can 'queue' a goodybag so that the date when your current one is due to expire the new one will start up which is handy.

Correct. You could try, but if they find out you will get banned. They are going to introduce a tethering goodybag at some point over the summer.

how would they know?
stupid giffgaff (ok stupid me for not trawling through and tranlating their offers)
why cant they just offer some clear cheap deals instead of this goodybag crap etc?
lets say i want 60mins 300texts a month for a fiver never minding the extra mins from calls etc
does this mean i can then top up 60quid (or whatever limit may be) and queue it so on eg 1st of each month it automatically refreshes so im on like a prepaid contract for a year each month starting with 60mins 300texts?

I've only ever queued one goodybag at a time.....not sure if you can queue more.

Personally I'm glad not to have yet another company with direct access to my bank account. The fewer the better.

create a queue to get new 5 quid goody bag 1st next month so 60 mins 300text that month also
no extra charges as long as not gone over those etc

Yup... And if you get refered by a current member you get £5 (a month) free.

You can only queue one goodybag at a time, so one active and one queued. And you get updated from GG towards the end of your month as to where you are with goodybags etc...

Yup.

Definitely no extra charges if you do as you say. Safe as houses.

You don't even need a bank account as you can just buy O2 vouchers for cash from wherever.

However if you do want to do anything 'chargeable' like send a text abroad or use the internet you will need extra credit sitting on your phone in order for that to happen. Otherwise you simply wont be able to do it (but still can use the goodybag benefits).

It's a great deal for people to put their kids on, too.

No excess spending possible (if you do as outlined above).
General question about Giffgaff.

When I upgrade to a new iPhone soon I'll be giving my 3Gs to the wife, she only needs sim only/PAYG/whatever so GiffGaff looks ideal (ie the £10 goodybag). Question is can you set up a monthly payment (direct debit/credit card payment) for each month for the goodybags or do you have to do that each month (or at least every other month if you queue one after buying one)?

It seems ideal but the wife is forgetfull so it could cost her more if she forgets and keeps using the iPhone without the goodybag.

Any advise welcome as the site only refers to top-up when setting up regular payments.
What's the reception like with these? In particular the 3G reception?

Also, what happens if you try use tethering?
Edited by: "chris-afc" 6th Jul 2011
If you order a sim via someone from the forums, you will get £5 credit when you initially register your sim and top up by £10(or more).
So you can then buy one goodybag, queue up another and have £5 credit remaining for your 3rd month which you can queue up after the first months goodybag has expired.
Its a great value tariff and you also get free giffgaff to giffgaff calls and texts for 3 months if you top up by at least £10 every 3 months, got all the family on it and saving a fortune!

I wish I could just get out my O2 2 year contract, I would buy this straight away. Still a year left...
ok thanks jamjaw and rumble
jamjaw, surely you dont get 5 a month though for referral? that would make it free forever.

still be nice to have some proper clarity there - if they like little bags etc then a 'build your own' would be good eg
10 mins 1 quid, 50 texts 1 quid, 50mb a quid (random numbers) etc

It is a one off free £5... so if you top up £10, you would have £15 credit, so could buy for three months...

And as for the "custom bags". It has been suggested a lot, but will never actualy happen. FAR too much effort for GG with no real profit in it

3G is the same as o2 (they use o2 network). Decent enough speeds too (the same as o2 PAYG).

There have been some issues with data speeds, but these are now solved (for me at least!)

You have to do it each month, and can queue one and have one active at all times... So maybe not great if you are forgetful (but they do send an email/text to let you know it is running out.

It has been like that for a year or so! I would not hold out hope of it happening too soon!
I joined Giffgaff last month, and am happy so far.

For me, it'd be good if they did a £5 goodybag with 60 minutes, 100 texts, and 500mb data.
Regarding the "ringing yourself up from a Post Office (or any other) line to add more minutes".

Just to point out that you can only do this for 60 mins each time. So you have to put the phone down every hour and ring again or you won't get any more extra minutes.
It's the average HUKDer's wet dream, an Orange San Francisco and one of these...
