I've been looking at this Planet X gravel bike at £1500 (was £2299.99) for the last couple of weeks and weighing up whether to go for it, as I can get it through the Cycle to work scheme. I just got an email from Planet X with the 10% code until Saturday which made me pull the trigger at just under £1380 including delivery. With the cycle to work discount factored in (you can use the voucher code MAY10 with the cycle to work voucher), for me it was a no-brainer. Currently only available in the White and Marine colourway as in the photo above, Large (4 in stock) and XL (2 in stock) only at the time of posting. It looks like the sizing comes up pretty large with the size L having a 570mm effective top tube, so I might have to swap the stem for a slighlty shorter one when it arrives.

£1380 looks a great price to me for a carbon gravel bike with full carbon fork, carbon seatpost, SRAM Force 1 x 11 groupset (carbon crankset and levers) with hydraulic disc Force brakes. Force is the SRAM equivalent to Shimano's Ultegra, the top-but-one groupset in the line-up.

Spec:

Carbon Fibre Frameset, flat mount disc, bolt thru 12mm (100mm front/142mm rear), 43mm clearance
SRAM Force 1 Groupset (1x11 speed)
SRAM Force 1 GXP Chainset - 42T chainring
SRAM PG1130 11-42T Cassette
Fulcrum Racing 900 700c Centerlock Wheelset
Panaracer Comet Hardpack tyres, 38mm
Selcof Zeta V2 6061 Alloy Stem - 100mm
Selcof Zeta 42cm Road Bar
San Marco Monza Start Saddle
Carbon seatpost (unknown) is mentioned in the description

As ever, pedals are not included, and if you really must have an explanation for why then you can read it on the Planet X page.

Just put some stickers on, its a carbon gravel so you would want them anyway.

Pre-covid could buy the frameset (with forks) for £700. As with all things PlanetX it's a rebrand. I owned the original and I can't remember the manufacturer. It's a quality frameset. Groupset is borderline junk for road riding.

Think that is very harsh on the groupset. I have a 105 groupset and a claris groupset and the advances in bike technology means they are nearly all remarkably good nowadays.
The SRAM Force 1 is a great groupset and for most people easier gearing is better than something overgeared.

A cracking price that. I paid £1200 for a Free Ranger gravel bike pre-covid. This is only £180 more. Bike parts have shot up too since covid. Heat!

Would you talk like that in real life?

Like the bike, hate the colour scheme.

It's a matter of taste, but there is a reason behind it. It's a reference to the 1970s colour schemes from the original Holdsworth company.

I bought one of these last year and it's been fantastic - I chose the other colour scheme, which I preferred. I flipped the wheels for some lighter ones (kept the originals as a spare set) and it rides brilliantly.

Wouldn’t buy anything from Planet X. They promise the earth and deliver F…all. Genuinely give these guys a miss. If you have any issues or problems they won’t want to know. You have been warned!!

I'd actually love a planet X bike but my employer uses Halfords cycle 2 work and it doesn't seem like planet X accepts them. Anyone know of a workaround?

Unfortunately not. I had the same issue and ended up just having to get my bike from somewhere else.

    Think there's a current 10% off code, MAY10?

I think the total price includes 10% off. It's 1500, minus 150, then must be 30 quid delivery.

Got a pristine condition size medium that I’m thinking of selling complete with 2 sets of wheels in the colour “ Burnt charcoal”. Awesome bike. DM if genuinely interested.

Mine has arrived, pretty happy! The front rotor is not true which is strange, I'll probably contact Planet X about that. So the brake rubs out of the box and still does even after adjusting the caliper position. The gears were also not right and needed more than a full turn of the adjuster at the rear derailleur which is easy to do but not what I'd have expected out of the box really.

It would have been nice to have a better grip tape but I usually double wrap with a decent tape on the outside anyway, so it will make me get around to that.

But it looks good value overall, looking forward to getting out on it...
