Probably not, it's a blanket term for the working class Coronation Street viewers that call all vacuum cleaners 'Hoovers'...."going to hoover t'carpet, and make cup o'tea before corrie starts"

Oi Oi! Less of the elitism! I think you will find it is a term used equally well by the upper class too, to whit:

'Darling could you wash the Daschund please, I've just got to nip upstairs and hoover a load of coke up my schnozz...oops
there goes my septum!'

But in this context you are bang on pal.

It was all just a bit of lighthearted banter.

It is funny though how historically brand names have been given as blanket terms to items, Tannoy, sellotape, duck tape etc

"Duck tape" is indeed now a brand, but it came long after the generic term "duct tape", which is the actual original name of this tape. It was used for assembling sheet metal ducting, mostly used in air conditioning and heating.

Lots of companies with popular products have a small division that keeps an eye on media use of their trademarks and objects whenever they are used as a generic name or description. Otherwise they fear that they may lose the rights to their trademark by not defending it, as happened to Bayer, who once owned the trademark "Aspirin".

How many of you lot out there were reminded to "flush the chain" when using the lavatory as a kid lol
