Hotspot shield ELITE free for 1 year if you have an .edu or ac.uk email address.

VPN Overview

"VPN technology enables you to send encrypted data over previously unencrypted networks. Besides providing you with private and secure Web browsing, VPNs such as Hotspot Shield VPN provide many other important benefits. Compared to a web proxy, VPN also offers much better security and privacy online.

Hotspot Shield VPN is the most trusted VPN in the world with over 200 million downloads. It is available for Mac, Windows, iPhone/iPad & Android devices.
Benefits of Hotspot Shield VPN

Unblock websites - Unblock YouTube, unblock Facebook, unblock Twitter or any sites at school, the library or your office with Hotspot Shield VPN. You can bypass filters and firewalls set by your network administrator to gain access to your favorite content anytime and anywhere you want.

Anonymous surfing - Because of privacy and security concerns, you may want to browse the Web anonymously. Hotspot Shield Free VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your computer and our servers to let you conduct your online activities (visit the websites you want, make online transactions, download files) anonymously, without being tracked and spied upon.

Hide your IP address - The Internet is infested with spammers, snoopers, and hackers. They silently monitor your online activities and steal your sensitive data like credit card information and passwords when you least expect it. If you connect with Hotspot Shield enabled, you get a new US IP address to mask your actual IP address and surf the Internet anonymously.
Private & secure browsing - VPN offers an enhanced level of security online. Whenever you connect to the Internet through Hotspot Shield VPN, your data, including passwords, financial transactions and instant messages, is secured and encrypted. Additionally, all of your personal information is hidden from web spies.

WiFi security - If you browse the Internet at a public WiFi hotspot like the Starbuck in your town, anyone on that network can monitor and spy on your web activities. Irrespective of where you connect from, a personal VPN secures your web browsing session and keeps your private data considerably more private.

Malware protection - Hotspot Shield VPN will alert you if you visit sites that are known to contain malware, and then block the site. It detects and blocks more than 3.5 million malicious, phishing and spam sites from infecting your device.

Data compression for iPhone & Android - Concerned with the rising data charges? Hotspot Shield VPN technology compresses the web content that passes through our secure servers so that you can get twice as much content for the same bandwidth cost. The savings can be huge if you are roaming while traveling abroad in countries such as Switzerland or Japan that have high data charges. It also comes with a useful feature that allows you to track the data savings generated in each browsing session."

Thanks! I got hotspot shield elite free for about 6 months and it was brilliant! Definitely gonna use this again works fast. Also if I recall correctly the more devices you add I THINK it adds on another week but don't count on me for that.

It doesn't work? I signed up with .ac.uk, it still just shows 1 day.

Gowthamj, you have to login to your hotspot shield account and redeem the code sent to your .edu or .ac.uk email address. Then it will work

On their website it says:

If you are a student with a valid .EDU email address, register now to get … If you are a student with a valid .EDU email address, register now to get a free one-year subscription to Hotspot Shield Elite with no ads.

So ac.uk e-mails don't work then?

Thanks for the reply. I might give it a go then.

Just one question (sorry if it's a noob question), but do all of you trust VPN's with your data, as all your traffic passes through their servers etc?

It's just something I've been concerned about, that's all. I'd be grateful for any thoughts on the matter.

What is an "OP"? and why do you thank it?

Do sch.uk e-mail addresses work? Secondary school students never seem to be eligible when it comes to offers like this.

If you are not a student then use code 200MM to get $10 off

yes thank you

Nice find, have some heat.

Thanks, worked with my ac.uk account.

It didn't work for me, just 2 days on a valid ac.uk account, with no code sent through.

Thanks OP. Almost as good as the free Skype premium for a year offer! I wouldn't use this for pirating and stuff though, they'll give your info out in a microsecond to the government agencies. Nice for using US Netflix in the UK etc though.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is it?? I work in a college and our firewall is preventing me from viewing their site!!

Ver simplified;
It is a way of other computers thinking you are based somewhere else - ie. America, Japan.
It is often used to access services that are only based in certain countries. For example using bbc iplayer not in the UK.
Also some people use Work VPNs to access files from work when not in the office.
Also VPN's are used often with Public Free Wifi (Such as a Cafe) where your computer is more secure from hacking.
I would not advise using any form of sensitive information through VPNs such as Bank Accounts.

I leave my VPN on most of the time, purely cause I connect to lots of different networks. I wouldn't use a VPN for banking, but for everyday use I have no harm in them knowing what i've been up to. Probably better then my own ISP knowing.

Cheers for that, sounds more like a proxy service than a VPN to me though. I hate it when OPs don't describe what a product or service is, and simply ASSUME that everyone will know what they're on about...

Once installed, can the pc be used as a hotspot (using software like virtual router plus) and all connected devices seeing the new VPN?

Doesn't work with cbs app on the iPhone?
