How to get a free eye test through the NHS

Thought this information might useful for some, my grandmother had glaucoma so I get eye tests for free and there may be other reasons for you to get it for free that people didn't know about.

Here's the article: nhsdirect.nhs.uk/art…895

And the details are:

You are entitled to a free NHS sight test if you are:

* under 16 years of age, or 16, 17, or 18 years of age and in full time education,
* 60 years of age, or over,
* registered as blind, or partially sighted,
* diagnosed with diabetes, or glaucoma,
* 40 years of age, or over, and have a first degree relative, such as father, mothers, sister, or brother, with glaucoma, or you have been advised by an opthalmologist (a doctor who specialises in eye conditions) that you are at risk of glaucoma, or
* you are receiving certain benefits, or credits (see 'further information' below for more details).

Oh God, here goes... maybe if it kicks off this time, the board Mods can stop the abuse,

My grandmother (on dad's side) had glaucoma and I have been told that is not enough to qualify. It has to be a direct relative as it states in that explanation above. You being entiteld is a stroke of luck rather than a deal or loophole.

As your Grandma isn't a immediate relative, am sorry to say you wouldn't qualify for an NHS sight test.
I work in an opticians and get this all the time!

I had FREE EYE TEST @ Tesco this weekend!

Is this a current offer they are running? Didn't know they had an opticians department.

Tesco are rolling out opticians into all of there extra format stores.
Its store specific as to what offer they are doing but its usually one of 3:
Free Eye Test
Half price sight test (£5)
Free eye test when you buy glasses

Some stores however might just charge the standard sight test fee of £10 which is cheap enough when D & A charge £27.50 for the same test!

Im 60 years of age registered partially sighted and diagnosed with glaucoma.
So don't ned to know my eyes are bad.

If you have to work with a VDU your employer is supposed to provide free eyetests. AND probably help with glasses.

Yes the company I work for do a reimbusement scheme. So although I will have to fork out the cost, I will be able to claim it back.

I'm having trouble reading this thread. :whistling:
