How to use up PAYG SIM credit on Google Play & iTunes

Maybe not a deal as such but I just discovered how to use up unwanted PAYG SIM credit to pay for apps on Google Play. I believe the same method will work on IOS devices. This works on EE, O2 and Three. EE (Chitterchatter) often have PAYG SIM cards on eBay with £5 credit for a quid so this is a very cheap way to buy apps, music and movies.

I don't have an Apple device so I haven't tested it but O2 has a link to doing this
o2.co.uk/cha…ile
and I suspect that other providers will do it too.

1. (optional) remove your usual SIM from your phone and insert the SIM with the unwanted credit.
2. Start up your phone and turn on data (even if WiFi is on).
3. Open Google Play, go to My Account, Payment Methods, Add Payment Method, Mobile Billing.
4. Choose whatever paid-for app you want and make sure you select Mobile Billing as the payment method.
5. You can now stick your usual SIM back in your phone but you will still be able to charge apps to your SIM with the unwanted credit. The payment method also shows up in other devices such as tablets.
6. Once your credit has been used up, go to Google Wallet
https://wallet.google.com/manage/w/0/#paymentMethods:
on your PC and remove the mobile billing facility for that SIM card.
7. Repeat as required!

looks like you can buy movies and music as well...not just apps.

Been doing this for years with t mobile sims. Its also the reason why several years ago they now limit the number of sims per 3 months. Pound shops still sell them though with £5 on.

Except I made an app (did naff all) and then used the credit to purchase it. Think it was listed in the top 500 at one point, and then for some reason joe public bought it, gave it 1 star reviews saying it was broken and got it taken down. Google takes about 30%, would make £1.80 per sim. Was boring and tedious, and destroyed several backplates of my old phone from removing the sim card so many times. Decided other money making ways were far more profitable.

Heat alone for the new idea. Thanks OP.

this is one worth keeping a note of for the future

lost count of the number of SIM cards I throw out because I had no use for them and they still had a couple of pounds worth of credit on them

the problem is it takes ages to convert it to points. Actually since mobile by sainsbury's first announced their close-down last month I've phoned them convert my credits to nectar points. After I've phone them 10+ times and a month later, not only I got no nectar points, the original sim card and all credits have been wiped off. Everytime I called them they kept apologizing for the delay...

Thanks for sharing. Some years ago I had google wallet and forgot password (entered it wrong a few times) and google wallet won't let me use this method unless I give them a copy of my driving license. I am not willing to give them this online. Is there any other way around this or any other ways to use payg credit? Thanks and heat added
Can you provide any links to such sim cards with £5 credit on eBay?
Thanks op

None at the moment, these deals are very intermittent. Here's their eBay storefront in case you want to keep an eye on them. Pound shops sometimes have the same £5 EE SIM cards.

Before I bother digging out my £10 EE SIM that I got with my new phone, will I be able to use mobile billing even if I have unspent Google Play credit on my account?

Yeah, you can choose which payment method you want to use. If the wrong one is selected, tap it and it will bring up a list of other payment methods.

I assume that you would need to have an iPhone (boo!) or a 3G-enabled Apple tablety thingy and fire up whatever their app store is called.
Might be useful:

Tesco Mobile’s pay as you go Triple Credit tariff gives you three times as much credit when you top up with £10, £15, or £20. So you could get up to £40 of credit for free. Furthermore, when you top up £15 or more you can add an extra 5000 free texts, 150 free minutes or 500MB of free data – the choice is yours.

Worked! Thanks

No, unfortunately not
Can this be used to buy music too? Maybe a hukd charity single on the back of non UK tax paying mobile phone companies (_;)
thanks op, this is a good idea I'm with EE, is it just for apps?

Can this method be used for GPM monthly subscription or to buy Adele 25?

Edited by: "deany76" 21st Nov 2015
Worth to note that only limited set of mobile networks are recognised by Goole for payment in this way - Three, T-mobile (EE now) and O2. See this link and check for 'direct carrier billing' option as accepted payment methods. Google play payment methods
