I'm on the lookout for a reliable laptop for MS, reasonably fast at crunching numbers on linked spreadsheets and a bit of TV/movie watching when I am away. I have been looking at the Curry's deal hotukdeals.com/dea…728 but I think this might be a better machine for me because of the extra 4GB RAM. Any advice and comments welcome. Thanks.

With a handy 14” HD screen, Intel i5 processor and 8GB RAM, this laptop is ready for all your adventures on social media and the net. It’s got enough muscle to handle all your word processing and email requirements, as well as enabling you to fire up your preferred media app, so watching your favourite films and programmes isn’t ever a problem.

Dual-Core processor
Intel’s 7th generation, Dual-Core i5 processor delivers impressive performance, letting you complete all of your daily computing tasks with ease. It's perfect for emailing and chatting, creating documents, watching movies or surfing the web.

Solid State Drive
With a 128GB Solid State Drive (SSD) gives you the capacity to store your documents and media, while ensuring quicker and reliable access to your files and programs. SSDs are far faster than regular hard drives. Ingeniously, SSDs don't use moving parts to work, which makes them far more dependable and also quieter.

Packed with ports
Featuring one USB Type-C and two USB 3.1 ports, you can be sure there is space for all your external devices to be attached. The SD memory card reader will helpfully give you the chance to directly upload your images from a digital camera to the computer. If that’s not enough, this laptop also has a 3.5mm headphone jack, as well as a HDMI port, so you’re all set for any multimedia experiences.

SAY NO TO 1366x768 ON LAPTOPS, AT ANY COST

Is it a running HUKD joke to find something wrong with any laptop deal posted. Has there ever been the perfect laptop or is it a myth.

It's says "with a handy 14" HD screen" so it's not FHD.

Why? Just need it for word and web... Not sure I'd need a higher resolution?

It's an absolute shame that we aren't demanding more as customers, I am sure that we can have 1080 screens for only a few quid more maximum. And I'm sure people would spend the extra ..... Let's call it 20 quid extra to get one as standard.
They will not change while we reward their decision to screw us over.
None of us buy any laptop over£200 to get a low Res screen.
It's simply unnecessary.

I don't normally say stuff like this, but for an extra £60 you'd probably be better off with this one.

And for another £20 we could demand an i7 instead of an i5. And for another £20 we could demand a 256GB SSD instead of 128GB. And a bigger battery. And a blu-ray drive.

Having made my point, I must say I do agree that consumers don't realise the collective power they wield. But we don't work together because we are too busy competing with each other. I want a better phone than you and you want a better car than me.

Note: I actually don't want a better whatever than somebody else, but the majority does, and the companies know this. They know it because they were the ones who convinced us we wanted it.

Happy Sunday y'all!

Yes, there are a dedicated bunch whose only pleasure in life is to vote cold on every deal that isn't their own, although many don't actually post any better deals other than that one time pricing error where they got an i7 with 1TB SSD and an 8K iris screen on a laptop for £13.55

The reason is usually: Not Full HD which apparently is essential or your eyes will explode when watching pirated films or porn that isn't in (at least) 1920x1080 resolution, also a puppy is killed every time a non HD screen is turned on.

Times have changed.

I wouldn't even accept a smartphone nowadays with anything less than 1080p screen, let alone a laptop.

Porn and videos look just fine even in 720p, it's when you actually do some productive work like office, emails or web that your eyes will appreciate 1080p instead of pixelated mess

Thanks but I'd rather a faster CPU as screen is fine without being full HD

Times change but average consumers don't - I wouldn't buy one for myself either but I do use these at work and they are usable, just about, they're certainly not ideal for spreadsheet work but I'd argue that no widescreen is ideal for Word documents either. Many consumers don't know, don't care or can't afford anything better so there will probably be these screens around for another 10 years at the bottom of the range of laptops.

I accept many replace phone often but do the average users actually know their phone's resolution? I suspect not.

I think that was unfair. As the screen resolution makes the most difference to your experience. It's your viewport into the pc. It's the actual pc for most people. Having crisper text and higher quality videos, and fitting more into a screen are more than fancy features they are important. A 720p screen Vs 1080screen will always provide a better experience for most than a i5 Vs i7 or 4gb ram Vs 8gb!.
And in this case it's pittance extra. It's just plain mean to not have 1080 at that price point.
Would you eat at a restaurant that considered putting salt on your food a premium because it would increase the cost of the food by 0.25p.. no because it would simply be mean.

I might start bringing the laptop thread feel to other HUKD threads;

Pork Pie 50p each in store at Morrison’s!!

- “Cold! Spend 10p extra and get a Gala Pie with 100% extra egg.”

Short sleeved shirts £5 each at TU by Sainsbury’s!!

-“Cold, no long sleeves. Why would anyone want short sleeves in this day and age? Demand long sleeves!!”

I'm still confused by these comments. Where can I get a laptop with 7th gen i5, 8gb ram, SSD and FHD anywhere near this price?

The one which was at JL for £389 is not full HD, its 1366 x 768 pixels and thats the reason most of them not liking it, also its weight is 2.4kg.
