Built in AMD RX Vega 3 graphics. Not sure if this is any better than Intel's integrated graphics offering

Intel is buying GPUs from AMD to put next to their CPUs so my guess is that Vega will be better than Intel.

Of course it is. Anything is better than Intel integrated.

I'm not that clued up on processors anymore. Is a Ryzen 5 similar to an Intel i5?

Whoever enters the descriptions at John Lewis don't seem to know what they're doing as this a Ryzen 5 2500U which of course comes with Vega 8 graphics:
support.hp.com/gb-…137
Which Intel cannot keep up with:
35121277-T4RIM.jpgAnd it's similar with most other game benches in that review
techspot.com/rev…tml
except maybe in Tombraider 720p where the Ryzen only has a 26% lead.
CPU wise it's mostly between the i5 7000U series and the newer quad core i5 8000U series:
notebookcheck.net/Our…tml
The difference with AMD's previous generation stuff (like the AMD A12-9720P) is huge.

For £40 more you can get this HP Pavillion 15.6 Inch Ryzen 5 8GB 1TB HDD 128GB SSD Laptop - Gold Only 1 year warranty as it's from Argos and it's heavier but some people prefer a 15.6 screen. HTH

Edit: I personally prefer to buy from John Lewis *because* of the additional warranty

I bought this exact machine a couple of days ago; nice spec for the price and ok brand.

However .... the internet only does 2g, the speed that goes through the machine is half the 100 whatever internet I've paid for. (long useful chat with my internet provider first) Oh, and only works well sitting in front of the router which isn't much use if I want to use it around the house.

Spoke to John Lewis help people, man assured me it's a feature not a fault. I said I thought it was supposed to be portable. To give the man his due he said it is portable ... it's not attached by wires. Basically, tough.

just did a speedtest. <1 ms
Download
34.45 Mbps
Upload
7.86 Mbps

My ipad on the same connection came up with speeds of 99.6 mbps and 6.01 upload.

Would appreciate comments;

Are you sure it’s not a faulty laptop? I’ve just bought one and it’s arriving today I’m hoping it’s not gonna do the same thing.
@daffodill2 what make and model is the WiFi card?
Because once you know that, you can go to a review site like notebookcheck.com and seeIf you can find another laptop with the same WiFi card as their reviews always test WiFi speeds

I have a similar situation at home, where I have to force my phone or laptop to connect at 5GHz WiFi frequency to get the maximum download speed from speedtest.net, unless I am standing next to my router. iPads have 5GHz WiFi built-in as do most ISP supplied modern routers.

Looking at the specs on HP's website here:
support.hp.com/gb-…137

It looks like they skimped on the WiFi card as it does not mention 5GHz WiFi frequency (so assuming it only has the standard 2.4GHz). Also doesn't mention latest "ac" standard. A shame for such a great spec'ed machine.
Found the service manual:
h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg…882
on page 18 it lists the WLAN options:
35128783-KeuD6.jpgwonder if the reception issues are more to do with 1x1 rather than the standard as N should still be good up to 300/600mbps, but more aerials are important for range.
