I use a 3 internet with legs sim card which costs about £45 for 24GB of data, which I have 2 years to use as I please. Agreed it's another thing to carry around, but it means I can have the laptop which is best, as opposed to be really restricted.

Also another benefit of them is if the signal is better near a window for example you can put the WiFi device over there instead of having to move yourself to that place.

Great insight Jimmy. Never thought of that.

An easier option is tethering from your phone. Chromebooks can even connect using Bluetooth and use the mobile data connection so you don't even have to turn on your hotspot. (I've personally not tried this but I've seen the option there). Might make finding a Chromebook easier as the ones with the SIM slot are fairly few and far between. (edited)

Agreed Jimmy. Just be aware though that some mobile phone contracts have restrictions on Tethering. That's why I went the prepaid data sim card route. Even if you don't have these restrictions, tethering eats your phones battery life quicker.

    The problem is more battery.
Today i was using my mobile as a hotspot for my tablet.
It went from 100% to 40% in a couple of hours.
Whereas Chromebooks (even with a sim) can easily go for 10 hours.

It just becomes impractical for me at that stage.

    Options are:
    1. Laptop and dongle (which needs a power source from either USB, wall socket or power bank). So potentially three items.

    2. Laptop and mobile. But the mobile needs a power source to maintain a good days usage so again three items.

    3. A sim enabled laptop, just one device.

Yes i do have my mobile but often (when I need the laptop setup I'm after), I just keep my mobile in my coat pocket and get notifications on my laptop or PC. I can respond without having to touch the phone and don't have to charge the phone until the end of the day.

My home mobile charger gets me back to 100 percent in 30 minutes as well. (edited)

Out of interest, Mr Hardy, where did you get the auto update expiry date from?

The list here wasn't so clear:

    Chromebook 14a - Jun 2026
    or
    Chromebook 14a-na1 - Jun 2029

I'm looking for a replacement for mine soon so want to use the right source.

I see, I did it quickly so may have misread the list. That said, however the celeron N5xxx series have either 2028 or 2029 expiry dates

Not sure it has the updates to 2029

I know it's not quite what you're asking, but I use one of those 4G Wifi hotspot boxes. This also has the advantage of letting me connect multiple devices.
