No IPS = Cold from me.
Currys forgot to add how much RAM this has. Was tempted until I realised this is not 8GB RAM.
Can someone just like me a laptop that is £500 or less, with 8GB ram, Windows 10 (not S), and is SSD.
Is that too much to ask for

If you have Thunderbolt port in laptop , you can build your own gaming laptop with external graphics card . Intel 10th generation have Thunderbolt built in CPU . But HP have not enabled it in these to use old chassis and motherboard.

There was also the 999 acer Helios 300 which was a deal and half.
Just bought this. I will upgrade the ram to 8 or 16gb. Problem solved
Worth getting the daughter for Christmas? It’s slightly over my £350 budget but I’ve come to realise I probably won’t get a 15.6” screen with decent spec for that.

I was told I need at least 8gb ram and I have no idea how to upgrade or change so that’s not an option.

The daughter is 13 and will use this mainly for school work (hoping it will last her until A levels) watching Netflix and YouTube. Is it worth getting? I’m getting so confused with all the tech jargon on the laptop posts my head is spinning.

Can you do this? I was looking at these laptops and after speaking to the head tech at currys he said that all the ram is now soldered in and none can be updated and that all office and windows codes are now imprinted on all hardware so nothing can be taken out and swapped and pirate bay (for anyone who uses that for windows or office or anything else) cant be used.
Can anyone clarify this and if this is the case, do you know what year or what model i5/i7 or ryzen5/7 did it change as I always like to upgrade
Any link with an 8gb model?

iOS is not a deal breaker really, she will probably use it for light YouTube and Netflix but I’m thinking she will probably still use her iPad for that.

Thanks for having a look.

This one £332.49 with an eBay discount code.
Very fast but It's a TN display, not very good. Might not be an issue with some people, or ideal if you're going to use an external monitor.

Or this one, beautiful IPS display, with lesser specs but still adequate, performance is similar to an i3 8th generation at £332.49.

Brilliant thank you!

I had already looked at the first one but like the look of the second too. Think I am prepared to take a hit on the display and go for faster performance as I think this will be something my daughter would want, I’m not sure she’d even notice the display if I’m honest.

This is another one I’ve looked at what’s your opinion on this please?

It's a 14 inch though, and a SVA TN display.
I prefer the Acer aspire 5 with an IPS screen at £329. I think it would be adequate for your usage.
Then if needed, add another 4GB RAM for £16 later.
Which is very easy to do on the Aspire 5.

I was told they are soldered in. I asked if I was comfortable to unsolder and replace, can I. He said they are made to not be removed.
He then said the office and windows keys are also noted on all hardware (including memory) and that if you replace, you would need a new key for these when replacing. He said you can no longer use pirate bay to find new ones either (even if you did purchase at full price) . Apparently argos are different.

I assume so if you bought it there. If you check receipt you normally get until Jan to return it if unopened. Gives you more time to research it.
I'd personally go an ask to the manager of the techies and ask who knows best about upgrading ram etc and whether it's possible in their laptops of whether its soldered or not possible at all.
Also ask for me, if you can change it, does that make your windows and office licence defunct?
Thanks

Ahh ok. So he was telling fibs? Are they go up in RAM or do you have to solder and if so is it easy enough?
Do the office and windows keys still work or did you need to type them in again or get new ones?
