To be fair, even though the price is reasonable, I think i'd be put off by the VIA chipset. Especially the 1.2ghz version.

I'd agree if this was the version with Vista but with Linux or XP it runs fine for the usual netbook tasks. Even handles 720p video fine. Best screen, keyboard and build quality available at this price.

Slow CPU, runs hot.

Has the best chassis by miles.
Has the best screen by miles.

Great buy but don't buy for battery life!

mmm I dont know, my wife has the notino ul100 which is Via and I have put Vista Ultimate on it and it runs superbly, better than the XP it shipped with, I was shocked, it is the V7-m 1.6 though so I dont know how big a difference that makes..

this CPU and chipset was designed to be a low power, low voltage and low heat solution. yes its a little slow but it was designed as an ultra mobile solution. so please dont talk or post **** !!!

Are you able to backup your statement with evidence? links?

How does this compare to the ones at PCWorld? Several under £200

e.g. Acer Aspire One A150AB 8.9" Blue Netbook Product Code: 488071 for £10 less?

pcworld.co.uk/mar…074

(if you can find one in stock)

Advent 4211-C far better deal. It is a refurb but comes with a 12 month warranty.

hotukdeals.com/ite…no/

so is this a good deal or what? as im after one?

Advent 4211-C best deal I can see out there at the moment

I got one of these for the other half as a Christmas present from the it247.com deal (nearly exactly the same price).

I've stuck XP on it and it does an excellent job in my opinion. She uses it purely for Internet, word processing, email etc...nothing heavy and it runs a treat. Batt life isn't that great at just under 2 hours, but I don't think that's that bad. You can always get your self the extended battery which should last 4 hours+

I've also dumped Truecrypt disk encryption on it to (as she takes it everywhere so don't want to run the risk of her files etc getting into the wrong hands!) and that hasn't impeded performance much at all.

Overall VERY impressed with the build quality and everything else really

For those considering buying a netbook, think about this...

"Netbooks are well-suited for accessing web-based applications, cloud computing, and rich Internet applications, and are less appropriate for running complex or resource-intensive applications" - en.wikipedia.org/wik…ook

This is a netbook. You can't expect amazing processing power, but it is definately fine for web browsing, msn, typing and simple non-processor intensive tasks. If this is what you intend to use it for it will be brilliant.

The netbook itself seems very good quality, with a brushed metal casing and good quality screen. This is by far the best looking netbook I have seen.

Also, the battery life is great (compared to my laptop anyway!), because of the low power VIA chipset and CPU. (...and if you need a reference for that - via.com.tw/en/…-m/) :whistling:

its been this price for months and is under powered cold.

Low heat my a.r.s.e! I've got one and after 5mins of use I can cook my breakfast on the back of it! My little 'un likes to use it but can't for very long because it burns her legs!

And it is too slow, and the battery life is poo. Shame really, because it is so well built.

iv got 1 and its great ,solid body and great keypad and iv put xp on it ,battery last about 2hrs but can buy bigger for it .

Seems that the Vista hasn't done it any favours, and battery life is less than 2hrs with moderate usage. It has a lovely case and screen, but let down by battery life and a not very powerful CPU. Guess it depends on what you want to do with it to see if its worth the price.

Foxy - I read on the aspire thread a post from someone with one of these. They had been advised by HP technical support to go into bios and have the cooling fan permanently on (to keep it cooler) but this will presumably effect battery life......

Nice one thanks for that! I have no problem leaving it plugged in so when foxy jnr uses it, I can run it cooler. Do you have a link on how to do it at all (cheeky question, I know!)

Thanks

I'll try and find the post but the poster didn't go into details..........

for the millionth time, a beautiful package that is fatally crippled

This is from a HP2133 forum hp2133guide.com/for…426
1. restart/ turn on your HP2133

2. at startup, tap F10 to enter the BIOS

3. once inside the bios, use the arrow keys to scroll over to the right three spots to "System Configuration"

4. look for the option "Fan always on with AC Power" And check to see if its on

You are a star. Have some rep!

As people have said, very high quality casing (metal not plastic so it gets a bit hot!) and a superb (96% of full size - WAY better than an NC10s) keyboard and (higher res than any other netbook ) screen.

Downsides are battery life (a BIT less than an Acer One) tho I believe you can get larger batteries? Processing power is also poorer than most Netbooks - most noticeable when booting the thing up tbh - if all you do is a bit of surfing/email etc. you're really not going to notice a massive difference tho.

If you've tired of Acer Ones and their dodgy ports, EEEs with flexi keyboards or the general "cheap as chips"ness many Netbooks have - this is worth a peek tho - particularly popular with PC Tech types (more rugged and takes more knocks) and writers (the keyboard - again - is really really nice).

I disagree with pretty much everything you say, and that is down to my experience with the 3 netbooks in our house, all of which have had GTA:Vice City on them running lovely, I currently on mine have said game, plus Pro Evo 06, Unreal 04, Project Snowblind & Colin Mcrae 4, on the music apps side I use a little USB audio soundcard and run Cakewalk Sonar, NI Guitar Rig & Tracktor DJ studio, all with no problems..

the term that is being used on this superb machines 'netbook' is so misleading, push them and push to beyond their limits and you will see just how far they can go..

I concur, all current ATOM equipped netbooks can handle 720p HD video and most games on low settings. These things should be far from just a web browser, people want them for media stuff and most are perfectly capable.

I'm typing on one now and the poster was indeed correct, it does get hot underneath (mine is now!)

I only got it Tuesday, it had an initialising charge, was run down completely then had another lengthy charge and hasn't been charged/used on power without being completely run down. The longest I get is 1 hr 40 out of it on battery on a new well cared for battery.

IT's been this price for months......simply because they can't get rid of them...they are pants, trust me, wise words of a previous owner.....get the NC10...if you don't want to spend that much get the Acer or Asus netbook, not this !

Why is there a glut of these at the moment?

A New model ships at the end of this month, I know as we are getting some eval one's in at our work.

All gone now.....:whistling:
