Depends on what you call value. For me it is performance than pixels

That looks better with 7th gen processor! but not available at that price now

If you see U or Y in cpu's name and you are not buying tablet or ultraportable laptop, then avoid like the plague.
Y - (dual or quad core) Ultra Low Voltage, terrible performance
U - (dual core) Very Low Voltage, low performance
Q - (quad core MQ\HQ) - Low Voltage, good performance
MX - extreme series - Highest Voltage, good performance (not always better than Q series)

Interesting, it seems every single i5 pcworld sells is a U though

Yes. And i3 as well.

So i7 Hq\Mq\Mx >....... i7 U > i5 U > i3 U > ....... and last - Core m or series Y

i7 U will be +/- same performance as i7 in 2011-2012, but as it has just 2 cores it will be slower with multicore applications (rendering, optimised games, etc).

Avoid as plague was too harsh, but if you seeing cheap i7 and expecting proper i7, you should check is it proper i7

p.s. Best 6th series i7 U gets about 5k passmark, worst 'proper' i7 getting ~8k (best 'proper' - 10.8k). Best i5 U - 4.8k. Best core M (Y series) - 3.5k

Yeah I thought all virtually all laptops have the 'u' variants in them, Might explain why my HP work laptop with an i5 5200u rather sucks balls in the performance arena

Intel Core i5-5200U - Average CPU Mark - 3481

About same performance as i5 in 2009 - 2010, but much better on battery, so you can enjoy working in train, airplane, park, beach, etc
