Not a Macbook?
Should be looking at 8th Gen i5's at this price. £400 laptop + £25 for used 4GB DDR4 RAM + £45 M.2 SSD = £470.

  • Intel® Core™ i5-8250U Processor
  • RAM: 8 GB / Storage: 128 SSD + 1 TB HDD
  • Full HD display

Well that's a fairly decent priced laptop although no stock near me and no delivery options so it was a good clearance deal if anyone managed to snag one.

If you can get an i5 8250u for £500 that's great as it's a quad core rather than this i7 dual core.
Memory 1 x 8 GB (max) no room for expansion
i7 on a laptop is a marketing gimmick. It's still a dual core! As someone already pointed out, the 8th gen i5 (i5-8250U) outperforms this i7 by some margin.

But seeing i7 gives people a warm fuzzy feeling, such is the power of marketing.

Marketing plop isn't it! - there's not a huge difference between the i3, i5 and i7 dual core U series from what I can see..intel have just muddied the waters with their confusing range of mobile processors....but I guess it'll be a selling point as an i7 is of course better than an i5 (unless it's an i5 that is better!)

Whenever a work colleague asks me for advice on what to buy and they are usually fixated on the processor only - they have no idea what an SSD drive is or how it can improve their lives 10 fold! Nor do they understand the difference between 1366 x 768 and Full HD resolution (or IPS vs TN panels!).

For an everyday laptop, I would take an i3 CPU + SSD over an i7 + HDD every single time.
