Ordered thanks op

Useful if you need a back up computer for basic tasks (like 95% of computer use).

I'm wondering about one for my parents as they hate using the tablet they have.

How does this compare with the Dell Inspiron 3531 which featured here a lot last year ?

My 2 youngest children are wanting a laptop for their birthdays and looking for the best around £200-£250

Good enough spec for general internet use and office stuff. Bought one for my father in October when Ebuyer were doing the £50 cashback deal. This works out £10 less so heat from me.

Similar specs. HP has a DVD Drive and AMD quad processor where Dell 3531 has no Optical Drive ad Dual Core Intel processor. Rest is more or less the same

Cool thanks, got the 3531 last year (using it now) - it's fine for my girl who just plays on friv and watches youtube, it's just not enough for the lad who's more into games.....

I've just bought a laptop myself because of a cashback deal but I think the general advice is that with windows 10 launching the end of this month there will be a lot of price reductions on windows 8 hardware. Yes you can update these for free to windows 10 but its a little bit more hassle than coming pre-installed where you know all the hardware will have drivers.

So there should be some good discounts in the coming months. This still seems a respectable deal though.

How good is the touch pad?

Would this be alright for emulating consoles like the N64?

From TechAdvisor Review: "The trackpad below is a decent size, moulded and rebated into the wrist-rest area but with an added rough texture that we found to offer better tactility than some shiny plastic types. And most important, the cursor followed our finger, where so many budget and even midrange Windows laptops can be all-too skittish. Two hardware click buttons save an added aggravation from buttonless designs."

I would suggest a chromebook, Ive never had any hassle since giving my parents one, when it was a PC there was always problems

It's about half the cpu performance of the xbox one/ps4 and a 1/4 to 1/5 the gpu performance of a xbox one.

It will be more than capable of emulating a N64 and possibly a few other consoles above that at full speed, maybe dreamcast, psp and ps2.

Just by the skin of its teeth its running GTA 5 so its not too weak;

Thankyou...daughters after one to replace her broken Samsung laptop

Picked the one below up yesterday from Currys after the ***** bumped the price up by £20.

Very similar other than the I3 chip and I gotta admit that I am finding it hard to justify the extra £80. Didn't see this one yesterday but the wife likes the red for my daughter's birthday present.

It's a shame the £30 cashback ended last month … It's a shame the £30 cashback ended last month :(https://www.hppromotions.co.uk/PromotionCat.aspx?cat=notebooks

why do you think it's ended? till 31st July...

ended 7/6/2015?

does any one know of a voucher code please

This might be fine, but I had a HP Laptop with an AMD chip in it a few years ago, and it was hot hot hot in the wrong sense of the word, it could double as a fan heater, which you don't really want sitting on your legs. Eventually it stopped working it was cooked.

I'm not sure if they have fixed them but there used to be real issues with AMD chips in laptops.

It's ended cos the only variant of model 255 eligble for the promo was applicable to purchases up to 07 June 2015. We are now in July 2015.

This works out at same price ( or cheaper ) as that dea, I think after the cashback !

Copy and paste from what I said the last time this came up people found it useful -

Bleeghh. These were £169 with a windows license after £30 cashback last month, picked up one to evaluate for work, as an alternative to continuing to use refurbished thinkpads.

I've seen worse, but not great either. Unless it absolutely has to be brand new, you're probably better off with a 2-3 year old refurb or reformatting what you already have.

Pro's:
- 15"+ screen
- large touchpad
- fairly svelte, doesn't look too cheap from a distance
- build quality is 'ok'. There's nothing that's obviously going to break in the first couple of years.
- 4gb of RAM is plenty
- 1 TB HDD, triple what you'd expect for the price

Cons
- cheap screen. Washed out colours, poor viewing angles - but, it IS cheap
- cheap keyboard.- short travel and a bit mushy, below average
- Slow, the A4-5000 in this is kabini based, which is AMD's answer to Atom. Much like the Pentium/Celeron N2xxx, it's offering roughly Core 2 Duo (ie. 2006-2009) levels of performance at very low power consumption.
- You only get half a battery. You don't get to benefit from the low consumption.. though it's obviously a bit lighter.

The reality is Core 2 Duo level performance is actually plenty for most people, and power consumption and heat are much lower. They're also really cheap, which is why there's been a big drop in the entry point for a new laptop or desktop in the past couple of years.

The bottom line is, consider what you've already got - this will be an upgrade for almost nobody. A fresh install of Windows (easy peasy, check youtube) and a air duster (£1 from poundland) in the vents will make your old laptop feel like new. Look into a cheap SSD (plenty on HUKD!) and bumping the RAM to 4gb if you have a bit of cash to spend. Don't forget, we're all getting Windows 10 at the end of next month too

And look hard at refurbs - it's not like technology has stood still the last 6-9 years, a used 2-5 year old i3 or i5, even the 1st gen, will be significantly faster, and may have other benefits too. Try a Thinkpad... Mmmmmm Thinkpads.. Lurvely..

PS. If you're thinking the Radeon moniker means you might want to play games on this, think again. Just as bad as similar Intel chips.

It's a good deal ;)it's a shame tesco don't offer 2 year warranty like John Lewis. Yesterday my HP chromebook broke it was out of the 1 year warranty they wanted to charge me £89.99 for a replacement charging cable as the battery would not charge so please be careful.

You know I missed that the twice I looked at the list!

Die shrinks have made laptop CPU overheating pretty much a thing of the past

Sorry to be so non-tech but I need a machine that's basic, not for gaming, has MS Word, I can watch a DVD on, and can reload CD based maps on an ancient Garmin.

I need to update the maps on my newish Garmin GPS through a USB Cable as well.

Will this machine do all that?

Thank you krism

Looks good, looking for a lappy for daughters birthday so this may fit the bill...

Ordered with Quidco

Thanks Krism

I got this laptop a while ago in the deal with ebuyer. It's honestly so slow that I can't use it, I can't stream movies on the internet because the laptop can't keep up and it's all jumpy as a result. Also the connection to the wifi is really dodgy, it is weak (I often only get 3 bars compared to 5 with my other laptop) and occasionally it'll just disconnect completely and I have to turn it's wifi on and off - usually happens at least once every time I'm using it. Even just for other uses it's awfully slow. I'd invest a little bit more money and try to get a better laptop.

Subsequently bought a thinkpad t440 (and with the better i5 processor) from a guy on gumtree for £220 and couldn't be happier

Ordered. ready for Collection in two days. Been looking for a few weeks to replace my HP G62 which was brilliant. I hammered that HP G62 since new over the years. Now its proper dead.

This will be ideal for DJ Serato, few games and movies. - once upgraded ram. Dont care about the HD all Qnap nas im my house.

Cheers. Hot!

I dont see as to why this should be a problem for them?, i'm assuming they're NOT 'power users' right?, so ..... :-)

Just received mine from tesco. Generally looks good:) only back cover looks a bit plasticky. After 30min use its still cold so no signs of overheating:) Overall so far great for this price:)

I second your comments, it's not fit for purpose

Will this laptop be okay for normal use and perhaps photoshop? No gaming though
