Ryzen 5 is far superior to Ryzen 3. That system has little scope for any future upgrade whereas this does.
However. First gen Ryzen mobile. What is the driver situation like for this range of CPUs and their GPUs nowadays? Also bargain basement HP build quality. This should be £249. $299 + tax laptops exist in USA with Ryzen 5 3500U. As usual we get shafted here.

I wonder how our trade deal with the good ole USA will turn out

Ryzen 5 and having to add another 4GB RAM yourself is a much better deal the Ryzen 3 - where you lose half the cores and nearly 2/3 the graphics... buying Ryzen 3 for the same price is utter madness.

Our 20% VAT should not be underestimated here, if we paid the same typical sales tax as the US then we'd enjoy lower priced goods by 10% to 15% or even more in some states. However they've got Trump, so cash saving and Trump, ultimately costs more for our good friends across the pond.

This is tempting as a basic machine for my pal. Not a heavy user (Internet, audacity music import, and word docs) but wary of going for lappy without usb-c (simply for future proofing). Is she likely to find that around £300 or unrealistic? Thanks

Quick answer, unrealistic. USB A will be around for a long time yet.

USB A to C cables are common and easy to come by. Worth adding another 4GB RAM for a few quid too.
