There are 2 versions of this laptop listed in the auto update expiration tables. One expires in Jul 2021 the other in Jan 2022. So at most there is 2.5 years of support left on the model. There have been exceptions within the last month but this isn't one of them. I feel that paying this price for 2.5 years support makes it a bit overpriced. I fully understand that others will find this acceptable so I'm not voting either way.

Edit
This has the celeron 3060 processor which makes its support expiration date Jul 2021. Way too much to pay for less than 2 years support even if they're new. Sorry voting cold on that basis

Will be handy to tap 'OK' when your chromebook says No... (support available), and 'Yes' to 'Buy new chromebook'.

My son's just started college. Is this any good for homework
How to play store apps that use would use on your mobile generally perform on a laptop?

What is the battery life like on these Chromebooks?

It has the Google apps already loaded on there, so it is ready for his homework/essays/assignments, he can even create presentations with the Slides app (Google version of Powerpoint). Unless he is doing something at college making videos, I think it easily would fulfil his needs.

Reena, your first question doesn't make any sense to me, so please consider revising it.

I had a G5 11" for a couple of weeks and the battery life was astounding.
I picked up the none touchscreen version of this for only £64 a month ago, expecting to really hate it. (Couldn't say no, considering the price.) To my amazement, it was good.

Having said that, I wouldn't pay £100 more just for the Touchscreen version, as the support window is now too short.

Just by keeping my eyes open and knowing a good deal when I see it. It was a one off unfortunately.
I have to admit that I love my little chromebook! So versatile, efficient and lightweight!
why do you people care so much about the support window? the thing will carry on to work just fine, it really isnt a big deal, its a chromebook after all for light usage and browsing.

Indeed, its not like a mac, which basically becomes useless past a certain time...
I love Chromebooks but before you buy one bookmark these 2 websites. Then also check how it performs, I usually use octane scores and anything under 12,0000 for me is a no go and 4gb ram minimum.

Auto expiry info (if the model you want isn't listed look at the processor used and the dates will be similar)

support.google.com/chr…=en

Performance, compare Octane scores and or Geekbench in the pull down menu on the right.

zipso.net/chr…le/

Chromebooks get around 6.5 years of auto updates, from the time the processor was used not the actual unit, they are looking to extend some ( like the Lenovo C330) but it depends on the manufacturers cooperation, see here:

1. For example - if a manufacturer releases a device on a 1-year old hardware platform, it will have 5.5 years of Auto Update support.

2. These devices have an extended AUE date; however, providing updates beyond June 2023 is subject to certain limitations including reliance on third party component suppliers. Google will work with suppliers in an effort to ensure continued support.

Check the auto update expiry and work out the cost per years left (you can usually install linux or windows on an expired chromebook but it involves opening up the unit, some have upgradeable storage and some dont). Mr Chromebox has guides on how to install other operating systems on Chromebooks, its a bit more tricky than a normal laptop and some things may not work.

mrchromebox.tech/

Gallium linux and cloudready are quite good alternative operating systems.

Personally I think all Chromebooks should have a use by date clearly marked on them just like food. Other than that they are no nonsense wonderful machines
Can the ssd be upgraded to a larger capacity

The operating system will only allow you to use certain apps... I have an imac and ipad 1, and they still switch on, and look pleasing, but can't do anything.
Use Google Duo it's easy and free..

Yeah that's only if you're using the Chrome OS privacy nightmare system. I mean that is the raison d'etre of this laptop, but you'd just install Linux on this anyway and ascend to freedom.

I agree, that there is life after the AUE. However there lies the realm of geeks and the well informed. Most people won't have the skill/nerve/knowledge to do this so the AUE info is an essential consideration.

Aye, I have loads of Chromebooks in work where the AUE has expired and they're stuck on Chrome OS version 55 from millenia ago. Apple support their products for years, I don't recommend going the Apple route as they have nothing in this price range but support is crucial. Although I don't get why everyone is willingly giving up their personal privacy for free to these corps, it's absolutely crazy. You are just a number to them and your data goes to the highest bidder, unfortunately too many people have the mindset "I'm not doing anything wrong so please come take all my data for free, I have nothing to hide". The problem is when you give up your data for free, it's not your data anymore and humans being humans screw up all the time, so good luck with that. It's all about convenience, give me convenience or give me death as the Kennedy's often said.

What on earth are you talking about?

It's not what I'm talking about, it's what everyone should be considering

reddit.com/r/p…cy/

"Our 'endgame' is to put an end to the ignorant and detrimental "i have nothing to hide" sentiment that so many people share.

Part of this monumental endeavour is the creation of a healthy privacy consciousness and a broader understanding of the topic among the general public. Most people don't care because they don't seem to understand it at all. Once that is accomplished, explaining the importance of interpersonal ties or similar proxy aspects of privacy wont be a necessary anymore.

Exercising individual privacy by the means of technological helpers is just one part of the entire process, which obviously should never outweigh or push the subject of privacy itself out of focus."
