Been looking for an 11.6" netbook with reasonable battery life for a while, and the ION based 311c seems best mix of price & performance. been hanging on for them to get closer to £200, but just does not seem to be happening - this seems to be about the best deal I can see around at moment.

Spec:

HP Compaq 311C-1020SA 11.6" Netbook (Intel Atom N270, 1GB, 160GB, Wireless Bluetooth, NVIDIA Graphics, XP Home)

NOte is same price at saveonlaptops site - saveonlaptops.co.uk/Com…tml

Lots of info on upgrading these & doing all sorts of interesting stuff at myhpmini.com/for…53f

ION Based chipset gives better graphics processing performance than the standard Atom ones - gives you performance akin to to the GeForce 9400m dedicated gfx card.

More info at en.wikipedia.org/wik…Ion

ION is a mobile version of Nvidia Graphics... I bought this laptop a few months back when it was on offer!

I upgraded it to windows7 and it runs much better than the stock XP!! Oh and its very overclockable! Mines running fine at 1.8 (i havent tried more) but i hear u can get them going to 2.3ghz with no problems!

what is an ION

It basically means the graphics card is good enough to play 1080p HD. However, you need the proper video application that supports playing HD video through your graphics card rather than the processor. Also beats the graphics cards on most if not all netbooks on games, etc. You won't see any difference on the small screen however, what you really need is an HDMI port on the netbook so you can play to your large TV screen. I don't think this has one though.

Not bad, but I'm now waiting for the ION2. Pine trail is a let down, except for power consumption.

ION is a platform, not a graphics card.

The ion is the platform, which is an atom plus a 9400m card i believe, this seems hot to me.

Price has been cheaper, probably explains the cold votes.

this does have hdmi

Not sure where I've seen them cheaper *new* - I know you can get a 'B' grade one for c£20 cheaper at Expansys (but then there's delivery charge to pay..). ASDA direct had them listed at £245, but with no stock, and they have since disappeared from there (its £279 instore at Asda)

I'd be the first to say this isn't a scorcher of a deal (around £200 would qualify for that), but as I said, £249 delivered from a mainstream retailer is cheapest I've seen in a while, so I think it is worth telling people about.

..and ION 2 when linked to Pinetrail *may* not be quite the leap forward people are expecting.. techspot.com/new…tml (but I'll bet will carry a price premium anyway).

Can you tell me what impact the o/c has had on your battery life? Is important to me as I do need a mix of decent performance & being able to run unplugged for 4/5+ hours at a time when I'm travelling for work..

Cheers!

Amazon site say not in stock until the 19 of june.

Quite like these 311, also hoping for the price to drop on them, £200 would tempt me.
The hp 210 is pretty good also, but probably struggles with video unless it is the HD version.

Other than samsungs, I'm also been tempted by these moving slightly away from netbooks.... HP DM1 and ASUS UL30 , these have ULV processors and plenty of power at a bit more cost.

Have the Ion chipset in my media centre setup and it breezes through HD content.
