Seeing as that deal is now dead, this deal is now the best

yes

depeding on the file type, it may require some fiddling with software to get the HW acceleration to work

As far as I can see, only the dearer version includes the Broadband wireless. It doesn't seem to be available to buy.

This is the 311c-1010SA version (none 3G integrated version) the integrated 3G version is 311c-1030SA model.

This is still a good deal, but me personally would want the internal 3G option.

311c-1030SA = 3G Version

I ordered mine last night, maybe they are updating their website?

I think this is a great price!!! Just wish it came with Windows 7!

Original Poster

if you are a student you can get windows 7 for 30 quid, all you need is a working .ac.uk email.

There was a link a while back on HPs site where you could get a free upgrade to Win 7 if you had purchased a qualifying PC.

I have it bookmarked somewhere.

What's better for daily web use and word/excel - this netbook or the samsung nc10?

Original Poster

This would make web surfing much more smoother and would not stutter, but for word processing and excel you can't fault the NC10.

Interested in this if you can post the link up please mate. Purchased the mini 311-1030SA (WWAN version just before Christmas). Was under the impression though that manufacturers were only offering free Windows 7 upgrades if the notebook/desktop came supplied with Windows Vista rather than Windows XP (as was the case with these Compaq's)?

Thanks.

Cheekster.

Yes, for everything but HD flash video, which does not use the graphics card for a horsepower boost*

*but there is a new beta of flash which does use the graphics card when doing flash video, not tried it so I don't know how well it works, but long term Adobe are obviously working to fix the flash problem.

The NC10 is a generation behind this in terms of hardware power. If you can get it cheaper then that becomes a factor, but straight up comparison between the two and the NC10 loses every time.

I disagree. This should perform about as well as the NC10 for office and surfing activities, but the NC10 has a smaller screen and no 3D graphics or HD movie playing capability. If that's not important, the current deals on the NC10 around here are blinding. Personally I bought this one and I'm pretty pleased with it.

I think that's how it works mate, it basically has the equivalent to one of them 3g broadband dongle thingy's integrated and you just stick your chip directly in your net book.

But saying that, im not sure if its open to all networks, these are questions you really need to ask someone who uses one or HP customer service.

Either way i'm holding out for the 3G version for the miss for the same reason, so she no longer needs that ridiculous dongle hanging out the side when shes out and about.

how does this one compare to the others on offer on the forum at the moment?

tia

been looking at this and the advent verona at £350 at currys, what are peoples thoughts on this laptop and the advent , can any experts give me some info please....

I have this netbook (typing this on it now) and I also have an NC10 for work. This is thinner than the NC10, but worse battery life (4-5hrs v 7+hrs). I find the keyboard on the NC10 better for typing, but the screen far far better on the HP for surfing the net, watching my slingplayer etc with. Also, you'd think there would be no speed difference in surfing the net, but in practice the HP is quicker, I guess because of the help the GFX card gives the processor. The NC10's touchpad is annoyingly small, and conversely with the HP I find my right hand thumb when typing touches the touchpad, moving the cursor around my text so I end up having to retype stuff, but that is user error tbh. I paid about this much for mine, and am very pleased with it. Excellent netbook sound as well. Reading around the net the 3g facility isn't all that its cracked up to be tbh, I have just bought a MIFI and am using it to replace an old 3g modem and find that solution far more flexible (you'll be amazed how many locations you go to with fringe 3g coverage, with a MIFI you just go and stick it on the windowsill, with inbuilt 3g you'd have to go sit on the windowsill with your netbook)

I have to agree with everything that erk has mentioned, I have the NC10 myself and was lucky to purchase the HP with the integrated 3G for my wife for Christmas from the original thread on here. I'm unable to comment on the use of the 3G yet as we haven't taken it out to test it, that said the HP is the perfect compromise between a Netbook and Notebook as it's both very practical and portable.

Hi All, any idea of the speed of the internal 1gb memory, is it the DDR2 or DDR3? If it is the DDR2, isn't a waste of money to add a DDR3 2gb ram instead of DDR2 ram as the system will only run at the same speed of the internal money even the added ram's speech can be higher? If the internal memory speed is DDR3 then definitely worth buying the DDR3 2gb ram to have the higher ram bus speed. Please clarify if I am wrong in selecting the external ram. Cheers.

You will need DDR3 ram, i got mine from aria for 30 quid. They are 204 pin, so I think (please correct me if im wrong) they are different to the DDR2s.

Can you get discounts by using quidco as well as the VCCODEHP voucher code?

I registered with Quidco a couple of years ago but can't honestly say that I know quite how to buy through it.

Thanks

P.S Has anyone actually used the internal 3G connection, does it work ok?

Hi thanks for the information. Can you point me to where it tells the internal 1gb ram is DDR3 type if you don't mind? Just want to confirm that before buying the DDR3. thanks.

Yes, I went through quidco and used the code for 10% off the price. No idea about the 3G model, but this deal does not contain the 3G model.

The 3G model is now available to order, the VCCODEHP appears to work but wondered if going through Quidco would also reduce the price.

Available to order but sadly at £359 before discount. This was also £299 before discount about a week ago.

At £359 the dual core Asus 1201N (which comes out next month) seems like a better buy.

Original Poster

As i said in the OP the 1201n has rubbish battery for not much of a performance boost. I got £22 tracked on quidco, so brings the price of this to £248, for an ION netbook thats good.

I just ordered the version with the integrated 3G module for £269.10...

When I clicked on the Orange broadband offer, it went into my basket as £299, and allowed me to use the VCCODEHP for a further £30 off...

I already have the non-3G version and have ordered this as a present for my Dad's 50th, its an excellent laptop, I've upgraded the RAM to 3G at put Windows 7 on it which it runs without problems. The screen size is perfect, and the resolution makes using it much easier than the NC10, although I have to say, the touchpad buttons are a bit rubbish! Now just have to see how nice I am as to whether my Dad gets the non 3G version....!!

Just have to hope Quidco tracks now! And that i haven't inadvertantly signed up for an Orange contract!
