Very good spec laptop and the cheapest i7 Quad Core full HD screen I could find. Grade A1 refurbished (so as new), with a 3 month warranty (more available at extra cost)

Not a hardcore gaming laptop by any stretch of the imagination, but a very capable everyday machine with the ability to play recent games at reduced performance.

I think the Costco deal for a new one is … I think the Costco deal for a new one is cheaper.http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/hp-envy-15-j142na-15-6-inch-notebook-silver-i7-processor-full-hd-nvidia-2gb-840m-2205959?page=8#comments

You're right, it is - However only if you're an existing member (which I'm not). I think membership renewal is running at £25 right now, so maybe a good option if you don't want to join Costco

A bit of a gamble paying so much for a "refurbished " item ?

Cold, if it's a refurbished it should say clearly in the listing

Check the website! These are predominantly customer returns without activation, combined with the warranty - where's the gamble?

For the £25 (might be £15) you also get a 2 year warranty, so cold from me.

Anyone know if the screen is glossy or not? Any reviews out there that show battery life of this model?

Bear in mind that HP are doing cashback offers on this line of brand new laptops, so it might be better to go for one brand new from an authorised seller.

Most of these are straigh returns from customers as the quality of the components in this range of laptops is abysmal. I'm talking from my own experience, as I got a similar model a few months ago and returned it immediately.

Costco one is a better deal.

Not only is it cheaper but it's new and comes with a 2yr warranty.

Still a pretty poor / distinctly average screen on these with washed out colours. Just make sure you're aware of what you're buying....

Have you looked in the BIOS to see if there are any fan adjustment settings?

I got the 15-j144na. The fan wasn't very loud as long as you weren't using more than 5-10% of CPU (after that the temp would start to go up and get noisy). The main issues I had with this laptop was the screen, which didn't display uniform colours (this was due to a non-existing viewing angle). The trackpad and keyboard were quite bad too. It was basically a portable PC (case), that you can plug to an external monitor, mouse and keyboard to be usable.

Even web browsing is going to set that fan off then
