Aren't these HP models the type that doesn't accept non-HP ink cartridges? That would mean replacement cartridges are more expensive than the printer itself.

Possibly. The other option is to stick with HP ink via the Instant Ink subscription scheme which takes the hassle out of ink management. (Instant Ink should be much cheaper than buying replacement HP cartridges yourself and if you print lots a laser printer may be more suitable to your needs.)
Are these any good? I'm getting fed up of Epson now... I don't print a lot but when I do, I spend half my time "cleaning my heads" and wasting half my ink just to get a legible print!

I'm an Epson loyalist but my patience is running out and HP seem the obvious alternative.

...even after they ruined the family Christmas back in 1999 but that's another story - thinking it's time to forgive and forget now

I've got a HP4520, it's brilliant. Not had any problems whatsoever. Pay £1.99 a month for ink, fine for what I use.
Stick to original inks and as long as you are printing something every couple of months, your heads should stay nice and clean. HP wins because of the instant ink package
Plus if you use a referral code and another code you can get another 3 months free ink meaning 9 months free ink

Cool... How does it work?
HP 7134. Is it better than this one?
Great deal and you can extend the free ink trail by 10 months for 300 pag a month which work out less then £3.32 a month and free printer heat added
Good printer, quick and simple to setup, instant ink with the trial can work out very cheap. Recommended

Yeah go for instant ink any it will be equally as cheap as those awful non-hp inks. I used to work in staples and had no end of people who’s printer had been messed up by the inferior ink not to mention it will void the warranty.
Okay, got my 2x today and just setting up now. "3-month ink trial" on the box - what's going on?!
