Celeron? Yuk!

Celeron? Yuk!

Agreed.

Will struggle with high quality stuff!

Cant understand why you would spend 300 odd quid or close to for a celeron when you can probably build a much beefier machine. [not a fancy case and brand name though!]

With the Hamper this works out a really amazing deal, cant see this being available cheaper. Glad this made you order. I have also stuck an order in.

And for the people voting cold... where can you find this cheaper?

Yes I do. For pure storage I use a NAS.

Either get something you can use for both a computer and a storage server or use a NAS. This is a high power consumption PC used only for storage!

Why not buy an Atom motherboard and a few hard drives? - low power and cheaper

is this a book shelf? looking for one for my daughter for xmas

whilst I agree with you that tthis machine could be bettter (processor for starts), and that you could build yourself a better specced machine for less money. You have to accept that not everyone is able to go out and buy all the bits required, build a machine from scratch and then purchase and install all of the software required and get that tweeked so it works perfectly.

So for the sort of person who wants extra storage with a view to watching movies or listening to music sso that they have everything in one place, for the most part, this is a great deal.

Its cheaper than it should be, its in stock and you get a free hamper...so it is a "hotdeal".

You cannot vote it cold just becuase you could build a better machine yourself.....

I have the original EX470...and its worked fine from day one, and it is currently holding all of my 8tb's of films, photos, documents and msuci...and I now couldnt live without it...I like yourself do have the ability to build my own machine, and I am awaiting a few more drives before I start to build the new machine....

But if I wanted a server and had no idea how to build one myself...I would definitely buy this.....

Heat added!!!!

In terms of the thing itself, I cannot find it cheaper elsewhere so it is hot.

If you want this for exactly what it does (it just does media things for you without you needing to configure things or get a screwdriver out), great.

In other senses not so great

-It is expensive compared to a NAS box (~130?)
-It draws more power than a NAS box (35w in idle - not too different to a modern PC)
-Anyone who wants one of these probably wants more than 1tb of storage and so will need to add more space themselves
-It is not too fast - the review mentions 30m to convert 2m of 1080p to mp4

So anyone hoping to get something cheap in absolute terms will be disappointed and anyone hoping to get something that just works effortlessly and quickly and will store everything will also be disappointed.

The lack of video out is a shame as it does reduce flexibility tremendously, I think an ideal Windows Home Servers setup would be an Atom Ion based mini-ITX with a few drives in the case. Low power and it should also be able to play back video.

I've been using an P3 laptop as a NAS/media server, just installing Home Server right now on a Studio Hybrid - if anyone like the idea of it and wants to give it a shot, MS offer a free evaluation copy.

erm this is a SERVER not a media player - you manage it remotley (and stiuck it somewhere out of the way if you want) - therefore no need to video out & all the added gubbins (to power etc).

Given the cost of this device it makes a lot of sense to take full advantage of the hardware/software, otherwise a cheaper, lower power system is likely to be more appropriate. There's no reason that WHS can't fulfil both roles giving it more capability over both a standalone NAS system and standalone media hard drive box. My current system hosts shares, streams media, runs web and ftp server while also capable of playing back video, Iplayer etc, to the TV it's connected to.

Good price for a Windows home server voted HOT!

You have the bookshelf, I'll take the hamper?

These are great. So is WHS.

So much more than a NAS.

Really small and reliable.

HDD are hot swapable and if wanted files are duplicated, access from internet, serves all my PCs, 360s, PS3, Macs, Sonos, itunes in the house. My CCTV writes to it too. I love it. But I am biased and I have one.

But listening to someone that does not or has never had one is ill advised. Reminds me of when I came back from the states with the original iphone.... until you actually use it you do not realise why it is so good.

You clearly do not understand the concept of a 'Windows Home Server'. This device will automatically back up all the data on LAN attached PC's overnight, can mirror Data folders or just replicate them, can be used to stream HD, the list is endless. It is not a PC, it doesn't need a fast processor or a lot of memory, it just does what it does exceptionally well. Great price, but my old EX470 (with 8TB) is still rolling along faultlessly! Great Find, H+R!

Lol, pants..:) very cold

It's nice, but beware that it might not actually be in stock when they say it is - I ordered one mid-November and it finally arrived at the weekend.

I just don't understand posts like this. Cold? why? Pants? why?

Not voted, but worth noting that this is technically only for HP staff and staff of other employee schemes (like HSBC).

Not sure if they will cancel orders, but at this price you've got nothing to loose!

Okay I want one but how do you use the quidco as well this seems to go to the partner site

lol @ the people comparing this to a NAS. idiots who know nothing.

more than enough for a server...this runs fine

yeh this is more than a NAS
i had one and sent it back as mine had probs but tghis an excellent deal!!
if you build your own with a small form case with removable drives caddies and put a couple of disks in it and add windows home server it wont be cheaper, sure it will be easier to upgrade but this is a good price

edit - got my 490 and its fine - reckon the 470 i returned couple years ago was faulty

with a small form case and caddies, and drives and os, er no i think not dumb dumg

Bought one thanks op best price by a country mile. Rep added.

Great price, great bit of kit. I bought one a couple of months back for £350 and have been very, very happy with it. Excellent bit of kit.

outstanding value, and you can swap the celeron for something beefier if you desire.

ok
mboard and celeron processor 100 (atom?! er no thanks!)
2gb memory 35
case 30
os 70
disk drive 1tb £70
doesnt seem cheaper to me, though perhaps more upgradeable, with an uglier case and no hot swapping trays......

why is it if i go via the hp site or quidco the price is still £429 - is the offer site (link via this offer) a genuine hp site?

yes I had this problem solved it by using part of the URL after going via Quidco not tracking yet but does state on Quidco HP won't pay out if you use another discount and XMAS09 is a 10% discount.

Not that HP seem to ever bother checking.

Does this come with one (useful) 1TB drive or a more useless set of 2 x 512mb drives?
