The £55 cashback deal on the HP Gen8 Microserver has been extended to include April and it is back in stock at ServersPlus and Ebuyer.

All of the details are pretty well documented on this, this is just a bump to let people know it has been extended again and is in stock.

One PCI-E slot renders this unsuitable for me unfortunately but otherwise these are excellent! Hopefully another ML10 deal will come along too

i got this last time out and a thing to bear in mind it took nearly 2 months for the cash back to go thru........

I have one with an i3 3240 and 16gb ram just upgraded but I am hoping for a ts140 I need a xeon cpu for esxi passthrough xeon chips for the gen8 are too expensive excellent machines though

Upgraded with a 1220L and 16GB RAM, great machine ... Use it as a vCenter server in a home lab, an ML10 might have been a more cost effective purchase though!

How much for Xeons? ..and I didnt think i3-3240 was compatible (as not ECC ) Might be a good upgrade if it is ..... altho it does look like its over the thermal budget too

Thanks OP. A very timely reminder. Any suggestions for best bet for drives?

Ive purchased and installed an i5 2390t. Not a bad chip, fair step up on the celeron and hyperthreading and vtx etc also. if you're quick there's one left online at Cex for £45 plus 2.50 postage.
That along with an extra 8gb stick and ordered a fdd to sata power to run a 5th drive in the odd makes this a cracking cheap esx box.
Oh and a 2gb micro sd for the ESXi installation.

I have no idea what this does, but it looks so cool I feel like I need it. Any ideas what I can do with this?

install xpenology and have a fully featured professional NAS. File storage, VPN, personal cloud, video server (dlna/plex), security cameras, and lots more.

They sell them with the cpu in now my temps are fine. I bought a pc with i3 3240, 8gb ram, 1tb hard drive and Windows 7 license for £50 on Gumtree then swapped the cpu, took half ram and swapped 1tb with a 500gb and sold it for £50 so nice free upgrade except couple pound petrol. Look around facebook computer groups for 10600e ram for the gen 8 I got 2x 8gb sticks for £20. Didn't know the i5 2390t did vt-d excellent thanks I will be getting that next.

How does this compare with the Poweredge T20 you can get for cheap? I know the T20 doesn't come with hotswap bays but then I've never done much hot swapping with my N36L.

The 3240 works with ECC, I think Intel ARK is wrong.Source

these arent hot swap bays, cold swap only ... will check out other cpus. ta :

You will get a much better price using flubbit with this on ebuyer.

Damn im really promoting flubit in my recent comments, but cant argue with facts.

Yes you need Elite, but its 1.50 a month and even had a 14 trial first.
Flubit price, for me: 143.43 and cashback should still work.i bought one via flubit 2 weeks ago, waiting for april 21st to apply for my cashback.

Just read that and for a second thought if it was in Russian?

Great kit

I have had mine a couple of months and just got my cashback this morning.

Fitted an i3-3240 processor, low profile gtx 750ti low profile card, 16gb memory (2x8gb) and converted the floppy cable to a sata and fitted an SSD to the side of the power supply with 4x3tb WD red drives in the bays and it works like a dream.

Definitely a good server for the price

How's this for h.265 processing/transcoding? I have one of the older N40Ls and it's really struggling to stream stuff to Plex.

I think the T20 is a much better option. You can get one I have, with a Xeon in it, for £210 from eBuyer at the moment...

Yeah, if I do bite I'm consdering the Xeon T20. That said I'd only use as a glorified NAS - I'm not really in to the whole virtualisation thing so I'm not sure what I'd use that horsepower for!

Thanks

I'd still go for the Pentium T20 over the HP. It's cheaper than the HP, has a faster CPU and has more expansion potential; the ODD tray takes two 2.5" drives and there's an internal mounting point for another 3.5" drive in addition to the 4 advertised.

Just for anyone's info, I've spent countless hours reading the posts on here:
homeservershow.com/for…-8/

I went for the T20, was cheaper than this.

Vut the T20 core2 edition, not the xeon
And it runs plex gloriously, 6 users (got a business line at home) and transvodes 264 great. 7TB of content and climbing

I went for a Xeon T20 too, from an N40L previously. Taken a bit of time to move it all over, but made me realize how slow the N40L was..
Was looking at the Gen 8 also but decided the T20 was better value if you want a much faster processor (for transcoding Plex), though costs more of course.
I was running WHS2011 on the N40L, now running that as a VM (for all the laptop backups) under Win 10 Pro as main OS, and seems to be much faster backups than before too.

So how much did that cost overall?

I run win 8.1 enterprise on mine. it's really a glorified file server, would I be better putting a nas type os on it instead?

I messed around with esxi. good concept but couldn't find a use for it.

I upgraded to 8GB and have all four bays filled. 2 x 1tb wd red and 2 x 2tb wd red both in raid mode

oh and for those wanting the advanced ilo licence I got mine of eBay for £18. allows you to remotely administer the server from another computer via browser or use the ipad dedicated hp app. good really as mines in the loft

I put freenas on mine and love it... Just finished updating the storage to 4x 4TB from 4x 2TB and it was a pretty painless process.
Others seem keen on xpenology, so I'll probably put the old drives to use on an old gen 7 and try that out as well.
I was in the same boat as you - used Windows 8 and then 10 as glorified file servers, and in the end just decided I'd be better off with a NAS OS

I've been toying with the idea of getting either one of these or a NAS for a while now - mainly for backing up personal photos and videos (so I'd like to have 1 drive backing up the backup) so I can free up space on our laptops on not rely on their hard drives oO. Not really for streaming at the moment but maybe in the future. It just seems that whenever I read reviews for the NAS devices circa this price (after cashback) there always seems to be bad reviews about software or lost data. Do people think this is a better option? Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions

Anyone know the size limit on hdds for this? I. E. 4x4tb...

Just buy this and run NAS software on it and it's effectively a high end NAS. Some software to consider is Xpenology, freenas etc.

For what it's worth I've got a gen7 microserver with an i5-3470 companion machine doing the transcoding. H.265 1080p brings the companion up to about 60% CPU usage so I'm gonna guess that the chip in this won't handle it.

As for the encoding to h265, I've got a dual xeon workstation going on that. 16 cores and it can still only get 1-2fps! :P

You don't need the Xeon in the T20, look at the benchmark for the G3320, the thing is a literal god in disguise.

Works grand.

So what cpu upgrade do people recommend for the gen8? .. Had mine for a while... Primary use is a file server with plex... And a couple of hyper v instances running a Linux owncloud& vpn and Window hosts for sab , sickest, torrents etc.

I don't need the fastest cpu out there....but an upgrade would be nice

Cheers
