Sounds like main selling point is excellent screen resolution.

Looks like mio maps with 3d maps, can you get something similar to that on the navigo?

nope igo

I asked this Q on the other expired thread, and am hoping someone who has one will look in and do a quick test for me...

If you dump a load of pictures in different folders on a SD card, can you browse the folders or does it just bring up all the photos on a card?

A minor thing I know, but have a specific use for the picture viewer, if this does it, it makes it more attractive to me than "just a GPS".

Searching for 'ipaq 314' might just get you there...

If not, it's here:

I have sets of pictures that I show people in order. I currently use an old Zodiac palm, but it's getting long in the tooth. The native app for picture viewing for the zodiac shows ALL the pics on the card in a way that mixes up my order. As I said, It'd help me justify buying the HP if it could take over this role and the picture viewer gives me a folder view interface...

TBH I may have to just buy it to find out if it works for me cos I'd also like the picture viewer to be able to go to the next picture without having to return to the browser view (like a presentation...)

It took me long enough to find a decent picture viewer for the palm!

I jsut searched ipaq and it was the second in the list.

In answer to the question about viewing photos it seems, from the user manual, you can set up directories where you can store separate favourites and then play them back as a slide show. So I am sure it will fulfil your Photo requirements.

Thanks!

I know it's a GPS, but I do like my gadgets to do more than 1 thing!

So, about 70 notes for a pretty good digital photo frame (800 x 480 screen) that will also navigate, has bluetooth handsfree and will play games (?).:p

Review was generally good but criticised sluggishness of the route calculation - looks like HP have fixed this with a software upgrade:
h20000.www2.hp.com/biz…118

Don't really need another satnav (built-in in main car), but for a portable unit (good for OH / holidays etc.) this has to be a great deal. Ordered. Heat added.

Look like a tidy bit of kit - just paid the same price for V3 TomTom UK & Eire

can't find this item? link doesnt seem to go anywhere. just me?

Cashback offer not open to staff :x Maybe I could ask a mate to buy it for me....:p

What like a Rorschach ink blot test?

Does anybody know if you can transfer and play films on this? If so it is easy?
I appreciate its a small screen for a movie but i'll be working away soon and it would come in handy!

does this have maps for all of western europe or just a few countries?

reading the HP site it offers to versions; the 314 (Western Europe) and 316 (Eastern Europe) so this seems to imply a divide but I can't find anywhere that lists which countries are included.

...and what age are the maps?

Just been out using TT5 on my Ipaq around Northants. 1) The actual place a stately home was not listed and you couldn't put in the name 2) I found myself driving across unchartered roundabouts and roads on TT. The roads looked well established, several years at least but were not in the version of TT5 I have (2004 or 5 I think)

I had this the other week when it was £95 after cashback.

At £75 I would fully recommended this unit. Billy bargain.

The speaker is a bit pants, but I run mine through the iPod connector in the car stereo and the quality of the Satnav voices increases ten fold.

I've hacked mine to now run Tomtom 6 amongst other things and find the screen resolution knocks everything else into a cocked hat.

Buy it.

How bad are the voice commands for directions please ? Can you have music on the the background or should it be turned up to full volume with nothing else on just to hear the commands?

Is it easy to add tom tom 6 and how much is it ?

The voice commands are clear even at high volume, they just get a bit crackly. Sound fine once you lower it a bit. However, once you pump it though some decent speakers you realise the quality of the voice recordings are excellent.

If you are playing MP3's from the unit itself, the song will pause when a voice command is required and then cuts back to the music afterwards.

A certain level of computer knowledge is required to get something like TT running on the 314. Definately not for the novice as the unit could be rendered useless. You can run it from an SD card, but I have TT6 installed on the internal memory.

Head on over to gpspassion to get some more info on this and other modifications to the 310/314.

CrazyAl,

I don't suppose you can try out the picture viewer for me. I looked at the manual, but would be good to get a definitive answer.

If you put an SD card with pics in different folders, can you browse the folders via the picture viewer or does it just pull up all the pics on the card?

The manual talks about setting up media folders which sounds like a pain...

I paid £175 before cashback 2 months ago so this is a 40% reduction in price. I think HP is about to discontinue this product given the price reduction that has happened. Eitherway I'm ****** off with them as I feel that I was ripped off.

I just want a reliable sat nav ,which is fast to respond..

should i go for ipaq or the tom tom one

Thanks

Looks really good - very tempted! Does anyone know if it'll work OK with a Mac or would I need to connect to a PC for updates etc...?

Does anyone know how this one works with TMA or extras are needed?

Also - the spec listed on Dabs is wrong - as its one of the obscure country packs it is showing rather than western europe.

So is there any way to combine western and eastern european maps (and the obscure one)?

How is the display in bright sunlight?

Could it be used for walking? (And if so what is the input voltage, and the life of its own battery - so I can see what size of battery pack I would need to make up to walk for 6 - 8 hours?)

Can it send music to a car radio with a USB port - like MP3 players/memory pens can?

What is the largest microSD card it says it will support?

Sorry for so many questions - but LOADS of rep waiting for good answers!

the review has some good answers, and u can slap tom tom on it :-)

but does it have full postcode search, traffic control and can it spot cameras?! and points of interest?

It does seem to have the camera file - and the video says 'millions' of POIs in this video.

]VIDEO

It also seems to have full postcode search - but it seems you need a 30 quid add on for the TMA - but this is based on reading loads of reviews rather than owning one.

mikmikmik;2567672

Their website says

The following countries are covered: Andorra, Austria, Belguim, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Manaco, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom

I've ordered one, thanks OP

TomTom or this? Will be used in UK only really, 99% of the time London.

I assume installing TomTom on this voids warranty/endorsed by HP?

If it can be set to run what is in the memory card in the standard functions - and the new software is entirely on the card - with the card removed they would never know.

I dont know enough about satnav - but if TomToms are 480x272 res and these are 800x480 res - if the graphics are vector based and you can change the settings it should display well - but if they are bitmap based - you could have a tiny display with a 200 pixel border at the sides and 100 at the top and bottom.

So if this meant changing its own spec - then the warranty might end.

Again based on reading postings / reveviews Ibiza:-

- Someone mentioned that there's a traffic adapter on ebuyer for £30
- No way (yet) to combine / add maps (although this was based on someone wanting US maps for their european device)
- Display is supposed to be its selling point so would hope its pretty good
- Fairly short life (90 mins) out of the box, but tweaking settings (bluetooth off, screen brightness down) put up to at least double that.
- saw reports of SOME 8GB cards working

The best site for searching is definitely www.GPSpassion.com although the threads are massive, so finding the exact info is a bit of a pain.

I am getting information overload.

It can run Linux - will work with Wifi with the Opera browser if you use a micro SD wifi card (touch screen keyboard I guess).

It would take so long to read all the info that the unit would be outdated by the time you were finished.

But it seems very impressive, although they seem to acknowledge the software version it comes with was near enough a not very late beta.

Its got to be worth a try!

DAbs is now showing 3-4 days, but has the same price.
